Damper spacers for serpentine belts?

Is it true that I need a spacer on my damper to align the pulleys for a serpentine system? If so, which one do I need for my application?

if you use a 5.0 balancer you shouldn't need a spacer. If you use the 351w you will. Keep in mind you need to balance the flywheel crank and damper as a unit.

The damper I got is a 302 damper (for some reason that's the one my engine builder choose) with a SCAT crank and an SFI flywheel. The entire stroker kit came pre-balanced from a friend of my engine builder who runs a shop. Will I have problems since it's a 302 damper going on a 351? I know that there is a difference in balance between both motors but I thought when you get a balanced rotating assembly everything should be o.k. thanks

If your damper was balanced WITH the flywheel and crank you are home free. If it wasn't you do not have a "balanced" motor!

Great! That's what I was hoping to hear. Everything was balanced together. Do you know if the damper I got needs a spacer for a Serpentine belt. It's a Ford Motorsport damper and the part number is M-6316-A50. Thanks.

I think the spacers are for the 351 damper with a serp. system.

I checked the side of the damper and I found a part#. I checked my 2000 FRPP catalogue and the part# matched up with a 302 damper. But out of 9 dampers offered (applications ranging from 302 to 460)it was the heaviest damper out of them all. Weighed 12lbs and there is a note saying "The damper has a removable weight that allows use as a neutral balance unit for internally balanced cranks. 94-98Mustangs and Explorer require mods". I hope it aligns up correct. If not, I'll need a spacer.

your running a 351W? Your engine guy must have ground the whole crankshaft down to balance your combo, because the 302 uses a 50 ounce/inch imbalance, while the 351W uses a 28 ounce/inch imbalance, making the 302 dampner nearly impossible to use. the correct dampner for the engine (FRPP) is part #m6316c351 and yes you will need a spacer which is part # m8510c351 (.875" thick)or m8510b351 (.950" thick). You can get around all this FRPP stuff by finding a '75-'80 302-351 dampner that measures 3.95" from the mounting face to the end of the snout with a four bolt pattern.
