GT40 head swap help

It's been a while since I've posted.
A little help would be appreciated.
I got to working on a gt-40 head swap.
It's all put back together, but it's missing badly. I thought that maybe I jumped a tooth on the distributor, but I jumped one tooth each way and it didn't help. I set it back to where it was and tried advancing and retarding the timing. No help. Yes, I checked and double checked the plug wire/firing order.
On the tear down, I set the engine at TDC and removed distributor, marking both dist position and rotor position. Both were set back to that position before rotating engine for roller rocker torquing.

What am I missing.

mkae sure you are at TDC on the compression stroke.

What is your timing set at?

Is it missing like running on 7 cylinders or missing like it is running on 4? If its four then odds are you are 180^ out. If its seven check the rockers, wires and plugs. Did you put a new cam in?

I'm still at 10* timing. Gas is too expensive to bump 14*

It seems like it's hitting on 7 cylinders. I'm going to take the valve covers off and check the valve train on Sunday. Hopefully it's something up top. If not, I'll have to strip her down again and check that I didn't bend a valve.

Wait a sec...TDC on compression stroke...that might be it. Check this...If I'm at TDC and the rotor is pointing to #1 does that guarantee TDC on the compression stroke?

Yep

gonna retorque all the rr's

Falcons Talon 03-21-2004 04:58 PM

Paydirt. I retorqued all the rockers and no luck, but it was sounding a little better. I took the heads off and checked out how the valves were seating. The number 6 intake is not completely seated. I think we found out culprit. The pistons are ok. I guess the heads came with that bent valve. I need to make a call and let this guy have a piece of my mind.

Has anyone here disassembled heads before. I would like gain some experience and save some money at the same time. I'll still take them to get planed...just in case, but if I can learn how to take apart and put together heads, that would be great!

Another Q...I shined a flashlight in the exhaust port and could barely see light around the exhaust valve on the number 5. Is this acceptable? Maybe I should just drop them off at a machine shop.

Thanks for you guys that offered assistance. I know that there are many more people here with knowledge enought to help answer this question, but I guess you're just too busy to help a guy out. Just so you all know, there were some bent valves, so I just had them all replaced and upgraded to Trick Flow Springs.

The heads are on now. Thanks again to those that offered assistance.
