Oil Pressure Update
I figured while i was changing the oil and and air filter i would put a new oil sending unit in, and what a difference it made. this whole time i thought my oil pressure was bad and i had great oil pressure. If anyone else has oil issues with the stock oil pressure gauge i recommend going to advance auto and buying that 7 dollar sending unit.

They seem to be a weak point. I've replaced the one on my '89 a couple of times.

What the should the srock gauge read, Mine drops down pretty low sometimes until I give it some gas then it jumps up but how do you know your having oil pressure problems, also where is the sending unit located on the car and do you have a part # for it, thanks.

Its right next to the filter.

Whens a good time to change it , what are some signs its goin bad or not working at 100%

The stock oil pressure gauge is alomst useless. It is really only good for telling you if you have some oil pressure or none at all. Uprading to an aftermarket one is well worth it. You can't even see the pressure raise with rpm with the stock guage.

I agree, my stock oil psi gauge just sits there. I always go with aftermarket stuff ASAP.

The stock '89 has a true oil pressur gauge, although maybe not real accurate.
I don't know what year they changed over to the on/off type units. Early 90's I guess, as my '94 van is like an idiot light with the needle type gauge. |

All factory gauges are ball-parking it at best. I prefer the the accuracy of aftermarket gauges. I'm even putting oil psi and water temp gauges on my new notchback, it's it bone stock. -Josh, aka the tireburner |
Where do the aftermarket like autometer oil pressure gauges hook up to.

You can either get a mechanical gauge or electric. Either way, the sender will install in place of your stock sending unit. You can install a "T" if you don't want to look at a dead stock gauge in your dash. If you go mechanical be sure to upgrade to a SS braided line, the plastic line that comes in the kit seems very unsafe to me.
