carb info
hi guy one question? has anyone use or know if the holley street avenger carb are any good. i was thinking of getting one for my 351
|
Although I admit I have never run an aftermarket carb. Every single friend of mine stays away from Holley carbs. They tend to need constant adjustment from what I hear. Go with a nice Edelbrock!

thanks for the info on the holley, i have a edelbrock performer carb now on my 302 but i can't figure out the cfms on it i would like to know, then maybe i would need to get a new one for my 351w

Hollies forever!
I love my holley. If I wanted something that I didnt need to adjust, I'd have stuck with my EFI. I run a street avenger 670 with the choke removed. I live in boston, so I get hit with the craziest weather changes and pressure changes almost daily. But, once I figured out my jet settings and power valve, I run that combo year round and use the idle to pad the mixture when it turns colder. I set my floats once and only once and am still running the stock accelerator pump cam and shooter. The only thing that requires "constant setting" is you need to go up front when the temperature changes like 40 degrees from day to day and turn the idle screws. Oooor, you can just do what I do: turn up the idle speed screw so it idles at 1200 rmps and then it doesnt matter if she's set up right since she's partially in primary circuit anyway. All that and I still score 23-24 mpg. Just soak down your holley with carb cleaner every few weeks and toss some fuelsystem cleaner in the tank to keep her flowing nicely. |
And I just passed massachussetts emissions with a holley carb! BOOYA!

i looked it says 1405 0120 so its a 600cfm with manual choke, so will it be big enough to feed the 351 or do i need to buy a bigger one? see i bought this car from some guy for $1900 the efi was taken out so the parts on it he put on, the other thing is the performer intake says edelbrock performer 289 on it are the 289 and 302's the same or is it a 289. i never owned a ford be for this so i have no clue.
|
Wait a minute. The intake manifold says performer 289 on it....the one bolted to the engine?????
I used to have the same manifold on my wifes car, I don't believe Edelbrock made a perfromer 289 for a 351 W! Edelbrock makes the Performer 289 intake, Then the regular performer intake, then the Performer RPM and so on... Buddy I think you have a regular 302 base motor! If thats the case the carb you have is fine. If it is a real 351 you can still use it if it is a REAL conservitive engine. If its got some work to it, it will most likely need a 700-750 cfm carb or bigger depending on mods. See if you can list some part#'s that are on the block to verify engine. Show some pics too, if you can. Let us know. |
Dude!!!! IF that says 289 on the intake, it is a 289 or 302. Most likely a 302. Unless you mean the intake on your 302. Yes, they have the same intake. If you can post pics, we need to see them.
But like 420nitro said, if it is a conservative 351, a 600 is fine. And plenty for the stock 302. |

you didnt undertsand my question sorry my fault, the 302 is in my car now with the carb and intake, the 351 is in the garage i know the intake can't be use but can i use the carb if it is a 600 cfm, the intake says performer 289 on my 302, now is it a 302 or a 289 thats in my car right now, or are they the same, i dont plan keeping either one if it will not work on my 351w, sorry again should take my time writing, i was in a rush today had a bid to get out by 3pm. |

Ok...check it out.... Like mentioned before by "Ieat Camaros" and myself...The carb you have on the 302 can be used on the 351 W. if it is conservitive. If you want to build up your 351 with some mods you will most likly need a bigger carb. Go to Barry Grants web site and see there recommendations are for your combo. BG's CFM ratings are conservitive when compared to Holley and Edelbrock. Do not make the common mistake that you need the same size carb that would normally put on a motor with someone elses brand. Good Luck. |
