Weird Shifting problem after installing a Tri-Ax shifter ??
I just installed a Steeda Tri-Ax shifter into my 89 5.0 Mustang today.
I installed it per Steeda's Instruction sheet. Set the Stop Bolts correctly etc... When I try to shift from 1-2 or 3-4 while accellerating, the tranny wants to downshift back into 1st gear! If I shift while driving easy, all the gears engage just fine. (FYI, the transmission was working just fine with the OEM crappy shifter.) What could be going on here ?? |
Just throw the stops away. Stock T-5's do not need stops. They have stops internally to prevent over shifting. Info from TTC at FFW Norwalk last year. If you set the stop too tight yes it will not fully engage in that gear. I think its just a gimmick to add the stops. My theory is that once you put a shifter on you will blow up your trans shortly. Due to one of two things. One would be the thought well now I have this shifter I can slam gears like I never have before and the other would be if you set up your stops too tight you will never fully engage in that gear and start wearing on the trans. Hope this helps.

Why when I go to shift into 2nd or 4th does it go into 1st gear instead ??? That's what I can't figure out ?? I'll be disassembling it later today. I'll leave the Stops out and see how that goes. BTW, who is TTC ?? |
TTC is the company who makes the tremec transmissions.

I reset the shifter earlier today, and it's still now playing the game..."Guess what gear I'm going into next !!". :bang: :bang:
What is adjustible inside the shifter ?? |
That's really wierd....I would try reinstalling the stock shifter just to see if the problem goes away.

Total BS. Stock T-5's DO need the stops. I've seen tons of broken shift forks on T-5's. The ultra gay and weak stock stops aren't worth a damn. There is a ton of flexing at the end of the throw. You've supost to put the shifter in gear with the stops all the way out. Then tighten the stops up till they just barely touch, then back them off 2 turns. That will allow you to still fully engage the gear. My theory is that if you blow your tranny up because you can't set a pair of stop right you don't need to me hot rodding cars. -Josh, aka the tireburner |
So what is the difference between the T5 and the Tremac 3650 transmissions ??
Any good websites showing the differences ?? I wonder if this shifter can be adapted to work in my T-5 ?? |

They're different transmissions. I would HIGHLY suggest you either return the shifter or if you bought it used, stick it back on e-bay. -Josh, aka the tireburner |
Katmandu- No I'm not a member of stangbangerz.com. Wish I was now though. I would have liked to have gone the the Air Force Museum. I haven't been there since I was like 6 or 7 years old. I've been wanting to go back just haven't found the time.
