head gasket
 
hey guys ia have a 66 stang undergoing restomod, so maybe someone will help me with a ? not pertaining to the stang. i am replacing a head gasket on a jd mower with kaw. engine. my ? is do i have to use anything on the gasket like permaseal or does it go on bare. i am not a mechanic by any means so any help would be appreciated. thanks

I dont know about mowers but most head gaskets dont need any sealer. Infact they tell you not to use one. Sealers dont compress well, and you really need a tight uniform seal around the combustion chamber. One thing/trick I did read was that some engine builders spraya light coat of aluminum paint on the surfaces for adhesion. I guess it is thin enough not to interfere with the seal.
