cam with california smog laws...

The mustang I'm looking to buy has a cam (along with some other upgrades), and was wondering how big one could be befor it was noticed when getting smogged, or need a sticker? Or? I'm new to intalling stuff on smog cars. So if anybody could give some pointers that would be awesome!

thanks-
scott

The first thing to find out if you are buying the car is where the cam and other parts came from. Most of the parts coming out now have to have a carb rating to be legal. If the cam is a Ford Motorsport cam they are usually noted as being 50 state legal. Most other aftermarket parts have this rating or a note that says they are not 50 state legal. If you are new to the Mustang world go pick up a Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords Magazine. Also find a friend or a parts store that has a Summit racing catalog. Summit is pretty good at denoting which parts are 50 state carb legal. Also check out the website of Summit. If the parts aren't Motorsport find the manufacturer and call or email them. Most cars can be tuned to pass emissions if it is that much of a concern. Take the car on a test drive and spend the money to put it through emissions. If you haven't purchased it yet then you are only out the price for the test. If you have then they give you a list of what the car needs and you can buy a temporary waiver until the problem is corrected. I hope this info helps you out.
