Flunked E-test

Well I took the Stang for an e-test yesterday and it went so-so even though it failed the test overall.

It passed the rolling test, but failed the idle portion of the test due to the HC's being way too high.

Does anyone know how I can manage to lower the HC's so that I'll be able to pass the test?? I can post the testing numbers if needed.

The car is currently setup with the combo below, timing 14*, fuel pres. 36 psi, brand new cats (5 days old, non-air style), no EGR, no air pump.

Try adding alcohol to the fuel. Make sure what you get is 100%. If you look around you can find fuel line anti-freeze that is all alcohol. Also try turning up your idle.

High HC indicates it's running way rich or way lean (unburt gas is going out the exhaust), but I'm more inclined to believe it's the former. You may want to turn the fuel pressure down to ~32psi @ idle, and go from there. Alcohol might help, though. Retard the timing back to stock setting, too!

Plz post them numbers up he'ya, lemme take a gander... ;)

If you still have it....(even though your cats are non-air, every bit helps), get that cross over tube that goes into the back of the heads and bolt it back up. Run the smog pump directly to this. This will guarantee that the air is injected into the system very early and has lots of time to help some extra gasses burn.

If you are really paranoid, remove the EGR valve and insert a hose into the back of the port and plug off the other side so there are no leaks. Run this dump hose into your fender. Now you are dumping some emissions "over the side". Attach a second hose to the nipple on the valve cover filler neck and dump the pcv gasses into the other fender instead of back into the exhaust stream. If the exhaust h-pipe has the reciever neck for the old airtube....attach a third hose and run this to the back of the car as a "stealth" third tailpipe. Have it exit over the axle. Some hoses make a lot of puffing noises, some dont. Bend it around if it's too loud, usually quiets it down. Yet more emissions out of the picture.

You cant help but pass with all that mickey mousing! Have fun. I passed MA emissions using these stellar if slightly sketchy techniques.

edit, double post

Ok, here's the readings.

------------Roll Test---------------Curb Idle----------
----------Limit-------Test---------Limit-----------Test
HC's ----76----------76-----------200-----------1158
CO%----0.42-------0.02---------1.00---------- 0.02
NO ppm-870-------137-----------N/A----------- N/A
RPM-----------------1532---------------------------876

I'm gonna go grab some Alcohol and dump that into the tank next time I go for the test. I'm also getting a custom chip made within the week, which may or may not help with the e-test (but will give some extra HP anways :D )
