timing

I have an 86 gt with a 93 h.o. motor that i bought and i was bored and checked the timing and it was at 20.5 degrees without the little black connector thing i put that back in and its almost 30 degrees at idle, is this normal. Im not sure what the motor has in it but it runs pretty wild. The only modifications i know of on the motor are a edelbrock 5.0 performer intake, bbk equal length headers, flowmasters, underdrive pulleys.

Is the motor fuel injected or carbed? With fuel injection, you'll want to remove the spout connector (grey) that is right in front of the distributor...your timing should be at 10 degrees btdc with that removed. The same #s hold true for a carbed setup...but you'll be removing the vacuum advance hose (black) and then setting the timing. But you should put it on 13 or 14 for a little more performance. 20+ degrees is way too high.
