What went wrong?

I just got back from the track. It was the first time I have ever ran any car let alone my 92 hatchback. Going into it I was expecting high to mid 14's. First run was a 16.4 at 84 miles an hour! That run I was shifting at about 5200rpm. I ran 5 times and my best time was 16.05@87mph. Every run I tried a different shift point, and I was going off the line at 2500rpm. Shifted at 4500 rpm, still in the 16's, shifted at 6000rpm, still in the 16's!!! What am I doing wrong? Is my car really that slow?O yea, my 60 fts were between 2.1 and 2.4, and my 1/8 miles were in the 9's and 10's. Granted I am not an experienced driver, i was ripping through the gears as fast as i could. Thanks for any advice.

Your mph tells the whole story. You need to get a tune-up and perform a basic engine check:

check spark plugs, compression check, leakdown, etc.

Then give your car a good tune-up. (A performance tune-up.)
Go back and then see what happens.

a 2.1 60 foot is respectable for street tires.....

Couple of possabiltys

1) your car is not making power
2) you = the suck as a driver

Nitro is right though, your MPH is low, indicating a lack of power. Tune that mother up.

check your timing, a friend of mine ran crap numbers , we checked his timing an it was at 8 degrees! bumped it up to 14 , car is like an animal now. its worth checking into.

Thanks a lot for your help. It was really disappointing to run so slow. I also have an exhaust leak in the right tail pipe, could that be an issue also? Which brings me to another question, will a set of stock 94 tailpipes fit on my 92? With new tailpipes I can finally get my flowmasters on. Thanks.

and o yea, where should I be shifting at? I'm planning on going every week now. Once I did it I dont wanna stop!

tireburner163 07-08-2004 02:51 AM

with the stock heads and intake shift at about 5K

Something is real wrong cause your trap speed is about 12-13 mph lower than it should be.

Check your cats and see if they are clogged.

Check your TPS voltage

Check your fuel pressure

Check your timing it may be way retarded.

PM me if you need any help.

Good luck,

stanger9219 07-10-2004 10:33 PM

The TPS is about 6 months old, the x-pipe is about a year old. I've had the same plugs since I got the car two years ago when the dealer said , "it just had a tune-up." That was about the same time he said, "its a rebuilt motor and has 3.73's." Yea right!! checked the gears, theyre 3.08's. That guy was a piece of shit but i was only 18 and gullible when I got it. Im gonna change the plugs, make sure the timing is at 14*, and start saving for some new tailpipes so I can get rid of that exhaust leak and put my flowmasters on. That same bastard put glass packs on it and welded them in on the bend of the tailpipe, so I need all new pipes. Thanks for all your help guys. Maybe after these few changes I'll be runnin what I'm suppose to.

i just put new Bosch platinums in it, and bumped the timing up. I didnt have a timing light so i set it to right when in starts to spark knock as the motor bogs, (second gear up a hill). It feels a hell of a lot stronger than it did a week ago. My question is is that is the car going to be in the mid 14's like it should be now? It feels a LOT faster but do you guys think 1.5-2 seconds faster?

Dark_5.0 07-19-2004 11:46 AM

Get a timing light so you can know where your timing really is. Then take the light to the track with you and tune it at the track.

I doubt timing will make a 1.5 second difference but stranger things have happened.

You won't know until you take it to the track, or use a G-tech if you know someone who has a one you can borrow. They're actually pretty accurate.

Bosch platinums

Not good for performance.

Ieatcamaros 07-19-2004 10:01 PM

MustangII460, I love your sig.

And I second that on the bosch platinums. Get Autolites or motorcrafts.

This is not fair but, 1.70 on radials.
18* timing
even 19lb injectors,
11.68 @ 116, no not on radials.

Do a fresh tune up, cap, wires, rotor, air and fuel filter, oil change, if you have cats, gut them. This is going to be a wonderful part of your life, welcome to MUSTANG WORLD.
