Shifting?

Sorry one more question before I head out to work. I have a 92 LX Coupe 5.0L ( pretty much stock except for exhaust and K&N filter ) was wondering if anyone knows from experience what is the optimal shifting for most power? For every day driving I usually shift around 2000rpm's or when one of those imports with those fart mufflers pull up beside me I shift around 2500 out of first and around 3000-4000 other gears. So like I said if anyone can give me some tips ( not a great driver, obviously ) it would be greatly appreciated.

1st gear 3000.. nothing higher if you want to keep your tranny healthy, other gears anywhere from 3000-4400 is ok. it all depends on you and where you feel confortable with. the motor makes great power at 4400-4800rpm.

5,400, 5,200, 5,000 - just don't power shift and the tranny will live just fine.

Thanks for the responses guys. Tmoss that 5200 that's in a stock right? Sorry but what do you mean by power shift? Never heard that term before or know what it is.

Power shifting is where you don't let off the gas when you shift.

Thanks .....too simple.

First off, get a shift Light. Second, take the car to the track and see what she likes. I would bet a 5000 or 5200 chip would do the trick

Ackbar00 what do you mean get a 5000 chip and where do I get and install a shift light? And is it good just for street driving cause I don't race just sometimes when some punks pull up beside me at a light, so I obviously want to beat them just want to know some helpfull hints how to become a better driver.

Thanks

thats what i do, i figured this would not kill a stock tranny, agree/disagree?

I killed mine about a month and a half after I got my car if anything think of it as a chance to upgrade. Got a borg warner world class T5.

That is the light I used to have. Very easy to wire (3 Wires!) It uses little "Pills"http://www.msdignition.com/rpm_images/pn87451.jpg to tell the light when to go off. It is a blast to have on a street car (I have one in my SHO with a 7000 pill in it now:D ) and will improve your shifting. All this, for less than a $100

i usually shift mine at 5200.

titanium92 07-31-2004 11:41 AM

Hey thanks for all the good info......:) . I'm taking thats only if your racing you use those shift high rpm's right? otherwise I would only be driving in 2nd for everyday driving lol. What kind of transmission is in a stock 92 mustang LX? And what's the advantage of having a T5 ?

Thanks again.

Ieatcamaros 08-01-2004 01:11 AM

The T-5 is the stock tranny in your 92 lx. There is no advantage of that tranny. Most will say they are junk. It is a pretty good tranny until you start to make some good torque along with powershifting at 6000. They won't take any of that for very long. First thing to go, synchronizers. The best $180 you can spend for that tranny is get a steeda tri-ax or pro 5.0 shifter for it. The stock shifter SUCKS. I opted for the steeda, but the pro 5.0 is just as good.

If your not used to shifting, then start low and work your way up. like the above reply, the stock trannys blow ars. this 5000 chip were talking about here? what is that?
