What The Hell Happened !

ok after about 5 hours i got finaly got my AFR 185's on, went for the test drive.... i STAND ON IT !!! and WTF ! maybe feels alil quicker then my GT40p's but not 1300 dollars faster !! im very upset...

im running 14 degrees timing, about 37 psi through regulator new plugs gapped at 40.

are these heads to big for my 308 ? is my intake mainfold not flowing enuff air down into the intake valves ? PLEASE HELP! I SPENT WAAAY TO MUCH MONEY FOR THESE CRUDDY RESULTS. THANKS GUYS.

Isnt .040 on the plugs a bit small, and 37 on the regulator seems a bit low, 45psi at least, what injectors do u have? give us more specs.

Cam?

leathal injection 08-19-2004 10:22 PM

i have an iski cam, i dont have the specs on it, the cam was in the car car went i bought it a year ago.

i run .040 on the plugs cause i spray it. and if the gaps not that close the juice puts out the spark.

im running 24 pound injectors. and i would think 37 psi on the regulator is more then enuff w/ 24 lbs injectors ? what do u guys think ?

bring that PSI up to minimum of 45lbs.. raise it and see how she drives.

37lbs is the stock setting at WOT, so on a modified car you need to step it up a bit.

185's are a bit much, IMHO, on a 308 unless you really get it up there in the RPM range, say 3500-7000. I didn't notice which intake/tb/MAF setup you have, but I'd say you need something along the lines of a Victor Jr/ Trick Flow breadbox to really need 185's. How much compression are you getting? Check it with a gauge just to be sure it's spot-on. One vital thing you NEED to find out are the spec's on that cam. The cam will have more effect than any other component in or on the engine, regarding its "attitude."

Coincidentally, I have a friend who ran World Castings' Windsor Sr. heads on a 302 (similar in essence to what you have). Granted he had not-so-great compression, but I still beat him with a mostly-stock '87 Notchback with ~150k miles. A friend of his bought the car and basically shifted at the rev limiter, and he got it to drop a full SECOND in the ¼-mile. The moral is that on these high-flowing heads, you either have to have a LOT of cubes or a LOT of revs.

Your fuel pressure is fine I run 38 psi with 24# injectors are my heads are as big as yours.

38 psi with 24# injectors will easily support 400rwhp.

I also have big heads on a 302 and I lost alot of low end but it screams in the upper rpm's.

Your results are normal.

Sounds to me like you need to wind her out a bit more, and let those heads do their thing. I think this is sorta where Capri306 was heading. Your shift points are gonna be all wrong with the new huge X large ports on the AFR's

On a side note, being a "bottle sniffer" myself, I would be willing to bet a weeks pay that if you spay it, you will be HUGELY happy! For example, let's say at your current N20 settings, you can knock of .7 seconds on your quarter mile time. With the new heads, I'd bet big money that same setting will net you better than 1.00!!

Make sure she's RIGHT, make sure she's HAPPY. THEN go spray it, and let us know!
