i hate my brakes
 

Can anybody help me out with my rear drum brake problem?? I have the brakes installed, then i bleed the brakes, then, after that, i can push on it a couple times, then the caliper/cylinder thing keeps exploding. The piston will pop all the way out sometimes. It has done this like 3 times now. The last time i put the drum on so it went on hard, then tighten it even more with the adjuster thing through the back hole. I dont know why it is doing this. Its only my left side of my rear end, the right side is fine. Any help would be great, im getting pretty frustrated with this brake crap!!!

I assume you mean the wheel cylinder. It has two pistons that push outward. If I understand you correctly, one of the pistons comes out of the cylinder.

I assume the drum is on when this happens.

So, if this is the case. It sounds like the little rod that the piston pushes into the brake shoe must not be hitting the shoe. Causing the piston to just pop out.

Are your shoes secured correctly to the backing plate? Correct shoes?

Even if the bottom adjuster if way off, it shouldn't make the piston pop out.

yup, you understanded me right, sorry about that. There is no rod that goes into the wheel cylinder, is there supposed to be?? The piston in the wheel cylinder is domed, and it seems like it hits on the high parts of the dome on the C like indent in the shoes. I was thinking that i had the wrong brake shoes, but i checked on dallasmustang.com and they show the same brake shoe in the picture that i have. http://www.dallasmustang.com/index.m...73dcb8a&p=5509 It says that those might not be the specific part, but i kinda was hoping that they were.

Although this is a front wheel, its the same.

See the wheel cylinder, theres a rod on both sides that sit in the rubber dust covers of the cylinder.

When you depress the brake, fluid forces these rods into the shoe, separating them into the drum.

Cool, do you think that i can just buy the rods that go into the wheel cylinder, or were they supposed to come with the wheel cylinders or shoes?? What would they be called if i can just buy them?? Thanks alot for the help, I am trying to get this thing back on the road for awhile before i have to find some place to store it during the winter. Hopefully during the winter i will be able to work on my 302 that will be going into it next summer.

Wheel cylinder push rods.

Part store should have them.

Don't usually come with cylinders.

Where'd your old ones go?

And....if your shoes have any brake fluid on them, there no good anymore.

thanks for the help. I got them fixed, i think that they work good now. I still havent really tested them, since i still need to get wheels for it, and get my driveshaft hooked up to my rear end. I was going to take the wheels off my dodge dakota to test it out, but i have been having trouble trying to find the right u-joint. I should have it all worked out in a couple days though, then i finally get to drive my stang again, even though it might be akward for my stang, pushing the 3.low something geared rear end with my 6cyl 3spd!!! haha, should be fun, thanks again.
