Machining Costs

Does anyone know average prices for machining? Im probably gonna have my 106,000 mile shortblock rebuilt with a 306 engine kit from DSS. So I would like to have the blocked bored .30 over and everything that goes with that (decking, honing etc) I know this usually runs about 500-600 bucks. Also I would like to have my stock rods and crank shot peened as I really dont have the money or need to buy new rods. I was just going to buy a base bullet DSS shortblock but 200 dollars shipping is a bit of a waste IMO. Im going to be adding ported stock heads, ported edelbrock performer intake, a TFS stage 1 cam and 1.6 RR's to the top end so I wont be making huge power to necessitate really good rods.

The DSS 306 kit im talking about comes with DSS forged pistons, rings, bearing, freeze plugs and ARP rod bolts.

Thanks!

Would getting the parts from Coast High Performance be an option for ya? If so, wouldn't that be a better option?
The locals here are not to hip on the D.S.S stuff and neither I'm I.
But that's just my opioin.

Other option would be to simply just get a set of TRW forged pistons from Summit and ARP bolts for the Rods and Studs for the Mains. I don't think a Main girdle would be necessary but wouldn't hurt either. Any compentent Machine Shop should be able to do your basic machining for the price you already mentioned.

Good Luck

Odd ive never heard anything bad about DSS, but have heard not so good things about CHP...

Yea, I guess the locals must here all the horrior stories for obvious reasons.;)

But you do have the other option that I mentioned too...

What have you heard bad about DSS? The only thing DSS makes in that kit is the pistons hehe. CHP doesnt really have anything like that unless i buy a whole shortblock and from what friends of mine have said who watched them build short blocks they arent very good...

The Summit Kit could work too.

Well all the bad things I heard about... I just won't say due to lack of proof and no more bad rumors need to spread.

As goes for the experiance I have..... goes as follows (good and bad)

Good
Bought a Machined block that was done CORRECTLEY.... Paid roughley $1,000.00 That included a main Girdle and local tax. ( I was pressed for time and they had me bent over) My bad no one elses.

Bad..
The pistons that I have seen enter the machine shop where I worked, that were "DSS" were not as good as Production Forged pistons. The factory forged pistons that came on the 87 to Early 92 Mustangs were better. Now I havn't seen their stuff as of late but the rumors are still going strong on variety of things. (I am not sure or can prove such things with-out investagation but not worth my time anymore.)

When ever I tried to deal with them, I always got someone there that always was cockey and knew everything.
I even told them about a particular combo at the time and asked there opioion on it. They said it would never run in the 12's. Combo was your basic GT-40 heads, Intake, 70mm throttle body.C&L, E-Cam, 1 5/8 Ful Length Headers, 5-Speed, 3.73 gear, etc. Car ran 12.50's and they said I was Full Of shit!
They even said that the TFS stuff is Junk, when they first came out and after the guides were fixed. Maybe they are different now but I lost all respect and wouldn't give them the time of day again! I wish it could be different because they are so close (I even gave them several chances) and the out-come has always been the same.:( come

I am getting my block machined right now. The place i am getting it done at is charging $125 for bore and hone, and like $40 for clean up. Then, there is all these other little charges, like changing the bearings and what not. I cant remember how it is for me to get my block decked. My heads will cost about (starting, depending on how much they take off) $30 each i think, to get them plained. All together its like $450 for the machining, plus switching out the pistons and installing them and the crank. (to figure out how much it needs to be decked) I am also getting a entire rebuild kit from them, with a higher performance cam. Everything will be about $770 for me.

Damn thats not a bad price at all! of course seeing as how I live in California Im sure it will be more expensive for me

I agree that's not bad, I had mine bored, honed, assembled, and balanced for 1400, but it's balanced to within 1/2 of a gram. These guys are good and have a very high reputation. Keep in mind you get what you pay for too.

Good Luck
