Location of outside door mirrors

Just put the 2 new door shells on and got them adjusted. I want to drill the holes for the outside mirrors, but since the old doors are gone I do not have any reference point. Can anyone tell me how to properly determine where these go. It is a 1965 Coupe.
Thanks!!

Re: Location of outside door mirrors

First, what kind of mirrors. There were 2 kinds of mirrors on 65 Mustangs, there was the standard mirror and the remote mirror. The remote mirror has a smaller base and different mounting holed. Let me know that and i can find out for you.

These are just simple round - Non Remote versions, so I guess we can call them the Standard Mirror. Any help will be appreciated.

This was more of a fishing expedition than I thought it was. I know somewhere I have a measurement in some reference book, but I have no idea where it is. If it was the remote mirror, I could go out in the garage and measure from my door. I found a picture in a black-and-white book that was one of the earliest, but most factual Mustang reference guides. This picture shows the front mounting hole of the mirror just in front of the frame of the vent window. It is a clear picture, it looks like the vent window narrowly clears the mirror as it swings out. I don't know how to put a picture in the body of the reply, so it is an attachment. If this doesn't help, let me know and I will try to find a better picture, but this is a closeup.

That is certainly more than I had. I am going to take the pic and see how close I can match it up to my door. Thanks for helping - thought this would be a simple thing..

I have seen them all over the door, but this is the proper location. The most important part is that the vent window open. Good luck!

Re: Location of outside door mirrors

On my 66 the centerline of the front screw is about 2 1/4' ahead of the front edge of the vent window frame where it meets the bottom frame.
Hope it helps.
J :D

BTW, mine are also non remote/standard.

If i were in your shoes, i would leave the mirrors off, go for that nice smoother look.

Re: Location of outside door mirrors

I think I have them placed. They may not be exact, but they are drilled. I would like the smooth look which is why I am not putting the rocker panel moldings back on, but The mirrors are kinda important to me. Just can't imagine driving around here without them. Thanks for all your help guys...
