Not sure here, my replacement ($15.99) from AutoZone was the same size. Just added some extra grease to it.

You got a throw out bearing retainer at Autozone for $15.99? I didn't know they even sold them.

I have never seen/heard of this problem before. How much shorter is the steel one than the aluminum one? If it's just like an 1/8" I'd say you're alright.

the shaft on the unit that is on the tranny is 3 and 5/8 the new one is 3 inches other than that they look the same the new one is a ford racing steel unit instead of the aluminum one and it was $40

ok i feel stupid the shafts are diff lengths if you measure them from the housing but apon futher ins (and a phone call to the supplier) i now see that the overall length is the same because the housing extendeds further up the shaft on the steel unit then it does on the oe aluminum unit
