Carburetor Advice

My newly rebuilt 302 has the Autolite 2 barrel carb but I need to add some zip. A friend sold me a slightly used Edelbrock CFM 750 but I soon learned that it was way too much carb for my engine. I have been told by various people at various times that I should get a CFM 650, 600 or 500. This is my daily driver so I'm not looking to go wild with the performance stuff but I do want to upgrade over what I now have. Suggestions? Anybody want a slightly used 750? Anybody want to trade? E.

Holley 600 with vacuum secondaries... get a spring kit as well so you can toy with how fast you want the secondaries to open.

It was my experience that with an overall stock set up other than a set of headers and dual exhaust(2"), and the intake(Performer)/carb combo, that the lightest spring that was in the spring kit really ran well... no bogs, no flat spots... through 5500 RPMs. I then got greedy... went to a 2 1/4" exhaust, and a Holley 700 double pumper, Performer RPM... It felt a bit flat off the line, but great as the engine reved past 6k... which isn't something recommended for a stock 302. Overall, I think that the 600 was the better carb for that motor.

Assuming since your going from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel you plan on replacing the intake manifold also. I have a performer package from Edelbrock on my 289. It consisted of the performer intake, a carb, and a cam. I opted for the manual choke. This package has improved the performance considerably. Is it a dragster - no. Is it the fastest 67 in town - no. will it put out 350 horses at the wheels -no. But on a cruise night it sounds pretty good and I can smoke the tires with the best of them. You may want to do your homework and check out the Edelbrock packages. A word of warning though - many swear by an Edelbrock carb and many swear at them.
