TFI module replacement

I've got an 89 GT which has done 105000 miles and it still has the origional TFI module. I have bought a new one but do you need a special tool to get to the screws? What size are the screws? This is a pain in the a$$ as the car has a few issues at the moment. Its not easy to get special tools here so if I need one I will have to order from the USA and get it shipped.

Cheers

Chris

There is a special tool made for changing the TFI. Its a standard socket size (4mm?) but has a reduced outer diameter to fit in those little holes on the module. You can also grind down a 1/4" drive sock to get in there if you don't have any other choices. Most parts stores carry the TFI socket though.

Thanks Jeff. There's a guy that I work with that lives in Texas. I will ask him to pick up a socket for me next time he is on holidays. There are alot of Fords in Australia ( home ) that are also blessed with the 302 efi windsor, so it will come in handy.

Thanks for your reply

Cheers

Re: TFI module replacement

I just changed mine out recently...managed without the module tool.

I used a 7/32 deep socket to remove mine...Now the reason why this worked is that with the deep socket,it's slim enough to get at the bolts on the module.I loosened the distributor hold down bolt (first noting the position of the distributor) and carefully rotated the distributor enough to get proper clearance to access the bolts on the module.

I loosened the bolts and gently pulled the module down.Clean the back of the new module of any dirt or grease and all mating surfaces of any old electric grease.

Apply fresh electric grease to the back of the module and install.

After it is installed, rotate the dist. back to its approx original location and set the timing with a timing gun (spout out of course ;) )

Worked great for me and haven't had any problems......

Good luck!

Thanks Milt 92GT. The 7/32 deep socket is a better option for me. Will hit town tomorrow to find one. There is a good chance that I won't find one but I gotta try. I've got a mate home in Oz at the moment. In a pinch I will get him to pick one up.

Thanks again

Chris
