new edelbrock carb/intake for my 65
I'm trying to finish all the connections for hooking up my new carb on my new intake and cant seem to figure out how to exactly hook up the stock throttle linkage and stock kickdown linkage. I got the throttle adapter kit but it still doesnt seem quite right. Now the throttle linkage doesnt line up with the kickdown so that i can put the short stock spring back in place? Any suggestions? Also, what exactly does the kickdown do?

Re: new edelbrock carb/intake for my 65
Edelbrock makes a kit for the throttle and kickdown linkage on Ford small blocks because the original doesn't work with the new carb.
The kickdown linkage works with the throttle linkage to kick your automatic down to a lower gear for passing or quicker acceleration. You don't want to drive without it, the engine seems to have no power at all. Mine was missing the hookup on the tranny when I bought it, ran like a slug. Found one on one of my friends' parts cars and hooked it up, BIG difference. |
Re: new edelbrock carb/intake for my 65
You just gotta mess around with it, try to hook it up somehow, which is what we ended up doing with my brothers carb on his 74 camaro. We ripped some stuff off the old carb to use, so maybe you can too. You definately need the kickdown thing, because i thought i heard/read somewhere that it can hurt your trans if its not hooked up, but not 100% on that.....

What transmission do you have? My c-4 was a vacuum kick down.

Re: new edelbrock carb/intake for my 65
I don't think your C-4 had a vacume kick down. It had a vacume modulator that told the transmission how hard the engine was working, by the vacume signal sent to it. The C-4 kick down is a small cable/linkage that is pulled when you floor the accelerator.
Your AOD has nothing but Throttle pressure to control the shifting and kick down. |
Re: new edelbrock carb/intake for my 65
I am quite aware of what shifts the AOD, since I installed it...several times. As for the C-4, can't swear as to what it had...that was just the best I can recall. You call it a Vacuum modulator, I call it Vacuum kick down. No argument here.

Sorry, don't mean to argue. But, there is a piece of linkage on a C-4 that is strickly for Kickdown.
