Oil Pressure

I bought an '89 GT almost two weeks ago and while it seems to be driving fine, I noticed something weird about my oil pressure. The guage will stay in the middle when I first fire the car up and stay that way for about 8-10 miles, after that the oil pressure will drop to the lower part of the normal area when idleing or when my foot is off the gas. When I step on it to speed up the pressure guage will shoot up to normal. I asked someone at Baxter auto parts while I was there picking something up and he said it was completely normal. He said that all cars should do this, I have never seen this before with all of the cars I had. My last two cars were also stangs, but not a 5.0, the were both 2.3L. Any thoughts...Dean

Re: Oil Pressure

I wouldn't worry about it; that sounds perfectly normal to me. As long as you're not experiencing rod knock, excessive valve train/lifter noise, or any other maladies caused by low oil pressure, just enjoy it and keep up on the oil changes. What viscosity of oil are you using, btw? As long as you're not using the el-cheapo oil, the brand really doesn't matter.

Re: Oil Pressure

Thanks for getting back to me, I used Penzoil 10/30. I am not getting any engine noises that are abnormal, I am experiencing one of my cats ratteling though, so at some point I will have to work on my exaughst. I already passed the emiisions test when I got the car so I have two years before I need to fix it...Dean

Re: Oil Pressure

You could always buy a mechanical oil pressure gauge so you know exactly how much pressure you have.
Other than that, it sounds normal.
