Honing Mistake?
 

Motor in sign. Professionally built Less than 5000 miles, more like 2000, not exactly sure. Spun #1 rod bearing, had crank turned. Replaced rod, new bearings. I am wanting to do this right!!! I plasticgauged the bearing last night. Arp moly lube.yada, yada, yada. I am really trying to dot my I's and cross my T's. Everything else was fine internally except for the spun bearings and the crank needing turning. I went on a got another oil pump, slight imperfection internally. I was at the car wash cleaning my block getting ready to assemble everything this weekend. Mechanic next door came over, looked and recommended me to hone it. Hand hone with the spring stone. Bought one, with some cutting oil, and honed the cylinders for 20 sec to clean up the glaze and slight discolorations from the motor sitting for 2 years. Not rust, just gunk. And of course, idiot me didnt do a search on here to find out if it was a good idea or not. And of course, there are mixed reviews. The "professionals" (i.e. Kato Engineering) are not big fans of it at all. Did I just make a major mistake? I am on a deadline, trying to make the ocean city car cruise in two weekends, The problem was, I wasnt thinking. I just took the mechanics word as the correct thing to do, I had been thinking about honing it, and he just reinforced my thoughts but I think i went about it wrong based on his advice. My only saving grace is that I did try to do it "right" with cutting oil and only 20 sec hone job as per the instructions on the hone. Plus I wanted to start concervative. Glaze is gone and i can still see very slight transparent outlines of where the "gunk" was and a cross hatch. Can post some pics if some very knowledgeable bros need to see. Advice? thoughts?

If it was professionally built, I'd be questioning the builder as to the spun bearing at 2000 miles? If the clearances were right to begin with, I can't see why the bearing spun? As I said earlier, I would be going back to that builder with the engine and some very pointed questions.

Been there, done that. His reply, "Welcome to the world of high performance" NO warranty on high perf motors, everyone knows that. I will just have to be sure to keep it under 6200 rpm now.. it will go to 7000 pullin hard on N2O. Probably the reason why it spun

You can hone it all you want. Thing is, did you goof up the runout on any cylinders.

Next is a dial indicator. You will have to check the bores. If your within spec, you didn't goof it up.

Then on to new rings. Sized and cut ( With a ring trimmer) to each cylinder.

If, If you scratched the bores up real bad your looking at a new hone at a machine shop.

Personally, Id take it to the machine shop and get them to put the magic to it. If it will take a hone, thats great. Even if its a bore job, its cheap insurance.

You may not make the time line for cruising ocean blvd, but id rather fix it once. The motor sat for two years and you want it fixed before two weeks? Man, thats sounds like American Chopper. Don't rush it.

I have been working on it for 3 months now. I was just going to replace the rod and turn the crank.

I wouldn't be real concerned about the honing. Hone it to knock the glaze off. My concern would be, "Why it spun a rod bearing"???? Many spun rod bearing are from detonation. What did the piston and rod look like??? Are there signs of detonation?? With NOS detonation could be the cause.

I'd check ALL my bearing clearances and fastner torques.

Main clearances are 0.0015", rods havent checked yet, still waiting on a rod from CHP. No signs of detontation. Completely disassembled block and have started over again. Been doing lots and lots and lots of cleaning. Crank and cam are installed. I just re-installed the cam, does the cam/timing chain wiggle at all(cam play)? spec is 0.005" NOT SURE HOW TO MEASURE THAT. the cam moves when the spocket and timing chain are not on, however when i reinstall the cloytes double roller timing chain, it seems like there is NO play.
