really dumb spare question
i'm sorry for asking a question like this, i promise i'll ask a hard one sometime soon when i start rebuilding my 289. anyway, it's about what to do with the spare tire. i don't really like how it sits off to the right in the trunk, i want to keep the car as balanced as possible. i'd LIKE to take it out completely, since it's about 25 lbs of pure uselessness, but i know that with my luck i'd get a flat the very next day. basically, i'm curious if anyone knows of a way to secure it exactly in the middle of the trunk. is there any little device or anything i can rig to do that? i've tried mustangsplus in stockton, and i've had no luck so far. i realize this is a silly question, but it's just been nagging me lately and i'm wondering if anyone else has this "problem". thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: really dumb spare question
not really man ..the gas tank is right there in the center - i think its cool to have it off to the right a bit since when you get in the car its going to sag just a tad on the drivers side ...think of it this way it will offset your weight and will make the ride look even?

Re: really dumb spare question
well, i forgot to mention earlier that i'm trying to even out the weight on the rear tires because the rear end likes to swerve from a standing start. sometimes it surprises me and a few times i almost bumped the car in the other lane. :(

Re: really dumb spare question
I don't carry a spare tire at all. I have the trunk filled with cleaning supplies, tools and spare parts that might be needed. I have good towing coverage and have never had a flat yet. I wonder how many mustanger's actually have a spare?

Re: really dumb spare question
I have my spare mounted in the original position. Mine weighs 50 lbs. though. I also have the battery relocated to the trunk on the driver's side. That moves weight from the passenger side to driver's side as well as from front to rear. I imagine the battery weighs at least the 50 lbs. that the spare weighs.
I especially like moving weight from the front to the rear. With me in the car, I now have 53% in the front and 47% in the rear. The closer I can get to 50/50, the better I like it. Rev |
Re: really dumb spare question
well it pulls to the right because of the open rear end ..not because of the weight distribution

Re: really dumb spare question
it doesn't always pull to the right, though. it's rather random. also, i was thinking of relocating the battery to the trunk, i know that's pretty common. but isn't it a pain in the butt? i don't think anyone out here sells the extra long cables for that, or at least i haven't seen them for sale. i'd also be curious to know the weight distribution on the 65 coupes in stock form.

302 to 351 w
what can you do for a c4 transmission in regards to a 351w. I know a 351c bolts up but a windsor doesnt. so what does anyone suggest?

Re: really dumb spare question
With a good limited slip like my Auburn Pro, the rear end will always kick out to the right with both rear tires spinning from a standing start. That's because the right rear will always spin more even with the best limited slip. The torque from the moror will unload the right rear and hyper load the left rear in a hard start. The limited slip really only locks up about 50% at best.
With the body twist from a hard start with a fair amount of power you will see the rear end move over to the right requiring correction to the right. It will always happen. Rev |
