Electric Fan and 600HP motor?

We're installing a 331 Keith Craft once broken in a Vortec T-Trim will be installed. We were running a Fluidyne radiator with a Flex-a-lite Black Magic fan that was working great to keep our 302 - running with a 100 shoot of juice cool.

We can't reuse the BlackMagic fan with the T-Trim as the new crank pulley will not allow clearance for the 4-/14" BM fan. We're looking around for a fan that will work with our motor estimated 600HPRW when completed, and will have a diameter of less than 4".

Any thoughts?

you should be able to find a slimmer fan no problem.

Re: Electric Fan and 600HP motor?

that was a typo on my part - not enough coffee in the ole brain. Fan needs to be less then 4" total thickness to fit between core and crank pulley.

I'm finding fans that will fit in the distance, only concern I've got now is whether a 2500 CFM slim fan will cool a 600RWHP motor with supercharger.

Re: Electric Fan and 600HP motor?

OK, we got that cleared up! I was thinking you were taking the cooling fan off of your computer, and hooking it to your radiator. http://www.knights-rule.com/cgi/vbul...milies/doh.gif
Anywho, 4" thick should be no problem. Think Black Magic, or honestly junkyard. I solved my cooling problems with a 16" (diameter) fan off of a 4.0L Jeep.

Be creative, take a walk through the junkyard instead of the Summit catalog. You'll come up with it. I've found that surface area that the fan covers is more important than the CFM it flows. ;)

My fan is fairly slim, and coulda been made to be thinner had I needed it to be. I used a tauras fan with a custom shroud.

If you are interested, I will post pics.

If you could post some pics that would be great - I'd like to see what you've done.

I did not use the fan's shroud from the tauras since the newer style radiators are so wide. I needed something that would allow me to mount this fan to the fairly narrow early style radiators. I wish I could take credit for making this, but a local racer that puts the aluminum on the tubular chassis did this for me. All he did was bend the aluminum in the proper dimensions, cut the old shroud away, and riveted it on. The whole thing is just slightly less than 4 inches, with one inch of that coming from the custom shroud which could have been made even less thick. The whole thing would not even be as deep as it is, but there is a bump in the middle of the electric motor that sticks out just a little.

No laughing at the engine either!!! It should be gone in two weeks, I hope!

oh yeah, I shoulda added that I put on of these fans just how they are made from ford on a generic aluminum radiator in my buddies 408W. It keeps the thing nice and cool, he loves it.

Looks good!

Do you know what the thickness is of the fan alone and the fan + schroud?
Did you get the fan from the junk yard?

Re: Electric Fan and 600HP motor?

The fan minus the old shroud (the way I have it...is under 3 inches), but I will have to measure that again to be sure. The shoud I have is right at an inch.

It was a unit that I pulled off a Taurus wagon in a local junk yard.

Do you have anymore pics of the fan shroud????? Pics don't work anymore

I am not sure why those are gone??? They worked for a few days, I will repost them sometime today after I get home from work.

ok guys, I have tried and tried to repost the images, but the board will not let me. Does anyone know if we are having troubles with the board right now when it comes to photos?

I recently put a Taurus fan in my 91 LX. Works great but for some reason I keep popping the fuse for the fan controler. Are you having this problem?

rwhite65 07-30-2005 03:18 PM

Re: Electric Fan and 600HP motor?

my system does not use a fuse, which is one of the reasons I picked it. The one I put in the 408 90 stang, I used relays on. What size fuse are you running? How thick of power wire and more importantly...how thick is the ground wire?
Ryan

Re: Electric Fan and 600HP motor?

The power wire is hooked up to the constant power for the A/C . A/C system has been removed. But the controller uses a 25 Amp fuse. The power wire for the controller is the size supplied in the kit 12-14 I think. I keep the ground the same size out of the fan to ground point. After the engine is warmed up at idle the fan kicks on and off as it is suppose to. take a short ride here comes the heat ever time.I found a Bosch power relay at WAYTEK Inc.

Re: Electric Fan and 600HP motor?

I would prefer a relay over the fuse. A 25 amp is gonna be way too small for that fan though, u need to find a larger one. Have u seen the junkyard fan set-up article that goes into fairly good detail of how to set up the electrical system for that fan?
