going to 50 series tires on the '88GT
Since I need a set of tires, on my 88GT, I was thinking of switching to a set of 50 series tires.
What is a good size that fit on the stock turbine rims? Also, what are a few decent brands I should look at? I don't want el cheapo tires or top of the line brands either...something in the middle. |
Re: going to 50 series tires on the '88GT
May I ask why you want 50 series tires on a 15" wheel? I've got 215/65 on turbines and I don't think I would want less than a 60. Just my opinion.
I found this pic that shows the tires my brother used to have on his car. I do believe this is a 55 series tire. http://webpages.charter.net/ieatcama...ges/55tire.jpg |
Re: going to 50 series tires on the '88GT
I must be missing something here. A lower sidewall will enhance handling. Stock tire size for these cars are 225/60/15 so a 50 or 55 series would be the next step up in regards to handling.
Why would I want to go to a 65? |

50's on turbines looks like crap thats what was on my car when i bought it and it looked like a damn low rider.

If you're going to use a lower aspect ratio tire, look for a 245/55 R15. I'm not sure why you want to use the turbines when you can usually find a whole set of rims/tires for under $400 with a little searching.
It gets a whole lot easier if you're willing to spend a few hours doing a 5 lug conversion. Then you can start shopping for 94+ Mustang wheels and tires. Last time I checked, the Pony wheels were ridiculously expensive for what they are. |

You should still be able to hunt around (ebay, racin junk, saleen, steeda) etc etc for a GOOD used set, or even take offs, tires and all for what you're willing to spend on 50's tires. MOST of the 50's I've seen are way up in speed rating as well, (read as way up in expensive rating as well) so there's some options for ya. |
Re: going to 50 series tires on the '88GT
I got a set of Dunlop 265 50r15 put on my car a few months back, I think they look perfect. they're about 26" tall and pretty wide (about 9inch tread) but don't look stupid or rub at all. I can e-mail you a pic if you want, I'd post one but every time I try to it doesn't work. ??? It was kind of a hard size to find, tirerack.com only shows the dunlops available and my local tire shop could get a couple different brands in the size, I think I paid about $60-70/tire.

I'll take a few pics tomorrow and send them to you dudes, it's kind of dark out now to take them. I didn't have to modify anything (quadshocks or fenders) and they don't rub though even over hard bumps, they're mounted on stock 15inch 10 hole rims.
