what makes a GT??

Was wondering on a 1965 Coupe what makes it a gt?? Or what makes any car what it is GT etc.. Is there a link to explain this all to me, the new Ford guy? :)

Use to be V-8 w/4 barrel carb, dual exhaust w/trumpet ends out the rear valance, grille lamps, emblems. Some years included disc brakes too. If I remember correctly.
