Re: Tryin To Figure Out What Motor I Have

Ford never put any of the modified engines in a cougar. It's either a 302 or 351w. That engine code indicates that it's a 1977 engine.
The head code you gave, you probably misread because the second digit should be a number not a letter.

Re: Tryin To Figure Out What Motor I Have

Please show me facts that they put the 351m or 400m in a 1978 cougar. I could be wrong but I don't think so.
"D5" indicates 1975 heads

Re: Tryin To Figure Out What Motor I Have

I stand corrected. Anyhow, IMHO, I would opt to look for a Windsor engine because there are more aftermarket parts available.
You'll spend less money to make more power with a windsor than you would a "modified" engine. That's just me though.

The only way I know to tell them apart is if you take the engine apart. The 400m has a longer stroke(4 inches) and the 351m has a 3.50 stroke. The pistons in the 400 also have a higher compression height.
Unless somebody on here can decipher the rest of the codes.......

Need more than casting codes to tell.

If it's got a "big block" (BTW, Ford never built a "big block" that was Shivvy) bellhousing pattern, it's definitely a 351M/400/351 Cleveland. Since they didn't put Cleveland's in a 78 cougar, and 62% had a 351M and only 5% had a 400, I'd bet money it was a 351M.

To know FOR SURE, tear it apart and measure the crank throw. That's the only way to tell for sure.

Re: Tryin To Figure Out What Motor I Have

I agree with Jester , a 351m will have 4.00 bore and a 3.50 stroke where as a 400 will have 4.00 bore and 4.00 stroke. If Ford didnt build a big block, what is a 460 classified as? I know alot a ppl called the M blocks as big block because of the bell housing bolt pattern, but there not.

Did I hear an echo in here.

Check if the timing cover is part of the block. If it is it's a modified engine if not it's winsor block.

ik this is an old post but if its the orginal motor you should be able to use the vin number..also idk what position the spark plug hole is on thoes heads but if you could ,you can try to put a 1/4 in extention in the hole and see if you can see if it moves more then 3.5 in. when turning the crank
