NEW TRANNY/REBUILT or USED ONE ? ? ?

HI GUYS

Here's the deal.

I got a guy who got a 5 speed manual transmission. He says I can take it to a tranny mechanic and let him check it out.

I didn't ask him how much for it YET

My wife and I talked about it and she recommended that I call a tranny mechanic her friend know and that he was honest.

HERE'S WHAT THE TRANNY MECHANIC SAID.

" I can open up the transmission but I still can tell how it will perform in the car  till I install it  "

I'll be honest with you guys on this message board. I don't know did- a- lee squat about transmission. However, if this guy is telling me the truth. How in GOD'S name can he say he don't know till he installs it

I figure when he opens it up and see all the gears look good and not all ground up ~ why would it not WORK IN MY CAR WITH THE ADDICTIONAL EXPENSE OF HIM INSTALLING IT
IS HE SNOWING ME FOR THE BUCK $ $ $

Or as my lovely wife said, " . . . why not just go out and buy a rebuilt one and forget about it. The rebuilt tranny will come with some kind of WARRENTY :)

O.K. GUYS I'M IN YOUR HANDS AGAIN
NEED YOU EXPERT STUFF ON THIS ONE.

P.S. My wife first suggested that I buy a NEW TRANNY. I think she's a little NUTS  a GREAT GAL, but just a little bit off . . . lol

Seriously guys: WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND

GOD BLESS YOU GUYS. I DON'T KNOW BUT YOU DO THANK GOD.

You need to do a cost analysis...

I would not recommend a used transmission, at all... however, if you buy a used one, have it rebuilt... or buy a rebuilt one from a reputable dealer.

No way do buy a used one and *hope*...

Hey Schooner
No matter what you do get one rebuilt. You dont want a rebuilt engine then have a transmission quit on you. Remember: is this transmission for a mustang? You may find you have to change the drive shaft due too length issues. I believe but not 100% sure. I would be tempted to either use the transmission I have or find the right one(c4,c6) for my car. Just a thought

yeah, swaping to a 5spd he will have to shorten the driveshaft. For the t-5 swap you also need a new trans crossmember and a cable clutch. (you can use the old linkage if you reuse the old bellhousing i believe.) Also will need a new flywheel and clutch/pressure plate. (This all is if its going into a classic stang)

Hi Bmxmon

In Responses To You Suggestions About Me Getting A 5 Speed Manual Tranny For My 'stang. I Want To Thank You First For Your Suggestions.

So I Take It, Its Not Just Going To A Reliable Transmission Shop And Saying , " . . . Excuse Me But I Like A 5 Speed Transmission In My '66 Mustang."

Its More Like: Do I Want A Tranny Oil Cooler ? ~ " Yes "
Do I Want A Temperture Gauge Included ? ~ " Yes "
Do I Want The Very Best For My Transmission Rebuilt ? ~ " Yes "

Now Sir, Where Is The "best" Transmission Shop In The Las Vegas Area ?
Or Is The Nation Wides The Best Ones To Deal With ?
Such As: Aamco And Whatever Else Ones You Can Suggest To Me.

Thank You For All You Good Suggestions.
God Bless You And Your Family
