Wiped Cam And Low Oil Pressure
HELP I been noticing a loss in power in my car i just got done putting in a new short block but i used my old soild lift cam in it at first it was running great but the last month i been noticing a loss in power. So last week i was going down the road and it started making a poping sound and the oil pressure was going down a little bit i took off the valve covers off and turned the motor over by hand and about 3 or4 CID.the valves are not opening i can see the other valves open and close but on these CID.the rocker arms dont go down, So i ordered a new cam and lifters BUT do you think that the wiped cam would efect the oil pressrure, Thanks for any advice Ronnie

Re: Wiped Cam And Low Oil Pressure
When you put your old cam back in, did you put the lifters in the exact same bores they came out of? That's VERY important when reusing a cam in a new engine(unless it's a roller cam).
I'd be asking myself why the cam failed instead of a drop in oil pressure at this point. |
Re: Wiped Cam And Low Oil Pressure
yes i put them in the way they cam out. I never seen nothing like it the intake rocker arm gos all the way down an up the ext. valve dont even start to open, Ronnie

Re: Wiped Cam And Low Oil Pressure
If you wiped the cam out, metal most likely went throughout the entire engine. At a minimum I'd pull the motor and remove the oil pan for inspection. You may have wiped out some bearings as well, leading to the lower oil pressure.

Re: Wiped Cam And Low Oil Pressure
The old motor was lossing power and thats one reason i got the new short block, But now the short block is doing the same thing as the old motor, That was the first time i ran the new motor really hard and it just didnt have the power but it was idleing great, last night i changed the oil and couldnt find no metel shavings. But the funny thing is the oil psi. went all the way around past a 100psi it has never done that so i let it warm up and it was holding 40 psi at idle, Thanks Ronnie

Re: Wiped Cam And Low Oil Pressure
did u re-use the oil pump from the old engine? If so, replace it ASAP with a new stocker...I would not run it until u do.

Re: Wiped Cam And Low Oil Pressure
Yes i did reuse the old oil pump, I started taking the motor out bnt dhouldnt i get a high volume oil pump? Ronnie

Re: Wiped Cam And Low Oil Pressure
A high volume pump is not really needed. It all depends on who you ask about that subject. I would also suggest you get a new oil pump shaft while you're at it. It's $7 cheap insurance.

Re: Wiped Cam And Low Oil Pressure
82GT is right on both accounts in my opinion. The high volume oil pump is really not needed. Think of it this way, how many 5.0's can u think of that have had gobbs of miles put on them, been ran into the dirt, and the whole time did it with a stocker oil pump? I put a stock one in mine and it has great oil pressure.
Get a new oil pump shaft, but get a new hardened one. Still very cheap and insurance that is worth the few bucks. Ryan |
Re: Wiped Cam And Low Oil Pressure
Thanks i will get a new shaft iam pulling the motor tommoow and check ALL bearings if they look bad i will replace them, Iam hoping the oil pump is just getting ready to go and replace it eather way CAR9FAN
