100 K Mile Stang
I have recently acuaired a mustang that has over 100 K miles. Now assuming that the engine was tanken care of properly, what would i need to do so that i can ensure some longevity of my car. I have about $2000 that i really want to use for speedparts but i don't want my car's engine to fail on me. So what would be that best additives and tune-up parts to add to my engine?

I bought mine with 130- something k, and it has been pretty reliable, now, i do think the heads were pulled off before, and had a valve job of some sort.
make sure it doesnt smoke, stuff like that, as for the 2000, well if you think your bottom end is up to it, bolt on some heads? exhaust? |
If i get some heads, i am thinking gt40 heads. However that will drain that amount considerably. Since this will be a daily driver for school ( i previously had a 67 with a 302 http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/frown.gif i miss that car ) i was thinking some small things that will add some minor hp. I got an 88 gt convertable and i know i have to make it sound mean. Maybe 3.73 gears, better shifter, 75mm throttlebody, egr spacer, 30 lbs/hr injectors and some cosmetics stuff like gauges and pedals and maybe a cold air kit, and a mass air meter. That sould be enough for now.. if all else fails then i save for heads.

I have 167,000 miles on my engine.. Still turns mid 13's at the track. No ticks, nice idle, doesn't use too much oil either!
I think you should switch to synthetic to start.. I switched at 105,000 miles and i really believe it's a main reason why I'm still running today, especially the way I've beaten this car! ------------------ Joe! 1988 GT, 167,000 miles!!! 13.58@105mph Check out my listing! I think the 30# injectors might be a bit to much for those few of things you mentioned.
Is it a 5-speed or auto? If its a 5speed I would go with a set of 3.73 gears. If its an auto go with 4.10. Then go with some headers and a h-pipe, then some type of mufflers. Then get a MAF and a bigger TB, I think a 75mm like you mentioned might also be a bit big for the limited amount items you listed. So go with a 65mm or 70mm. Dont forget underdrive pulleys. Then after you get some more money saved up, go after a intake and a set of heads. ------------------ 347 Stroker Motor: Balanced, Cobra Transmission, Extrude Ported and Polished Upper and ported Lower, GT40 Milled Ported and Polished Heads, B303 Cam, BBK 1 5/8 Headers, 30lb Bosch Injectors, Holley AFPR, March Underdrive Pulleys, Perma-Cool Fan, 3-Core Radiator, Accel Performance Coil, Accel 300+ Racing Wires, Ram Air, K&N Filter, 73mm Vortech MAF, 70mm TB, FlowMaster Exhaust w/BBK Offroad H-Pipe, Hurst Shifter, 3:55 Gears, Ram Clutch, Cross Drilled Rotors, AC and Smog del, rear seat del. |
I agree with Smokedawg and the previous posts.
Rear gears, installed, run about $400., a shifter is $200., headers will run around $200., underdrive pulleys cost around $100. Figure a 'ballpark' figure of $1000. for basic mods, depending on installation costs. You would still have $1000. left and a set of used GT40 heads might be feasible, with a valve job and new guides, etc. Less than $1000. Add a 65mm TB and a 190 gph FP and you're in business, with a 13-second Mustang. Your bottom end should be fine if the engine was maintained, but a compression test will tell you for sure. Do it to avoid nasty surprises later. |
It is automatic and i want to put a shift kit in it... anyone ideas where to get one and how much it should be?
