New Tires?

I have finally worn out my stock tires on my 2001 Mustang GT. My question is what would be the best replacement tires for a daily driver? I would really like something that would grip alittle better. I have the bullit rims and the z rated tires that came with them really makes my car feel like a skateboard.

Have you looked at Nitto 450? Very good street tire.

I'll second that on the nitto's. they are a very good street tire. Thats what I'm currently running on mine. Although, I do have a question. What exactly are you looking for as far as grip, straight line, street/strip, turning? What mods have you performed on it? The nitto's aren't bad for a basically stock car, but when you put some back behind it they lose their appeal. Drag radials may not be a bad way to go with it. The Nitto 555r's are also a great tire. I run them on the street when I don't have the ... well, I don't wanna change rims back and forth and they run and hold up just fine.

Re: New Tires?

I've been running Falken Ziex 512s and am very happy with their performance and they are CHEAP for z-rated performance tires. I got my fronts for like $95 each (245-45/17) and my rears for like $105 each (275-40/17). They perform just as well as some of the tires I paid more than twice as much for. Got sub-2.0 60-fts at the track and corner well, very predictable at the limit. I have over 400 rwtq and when they are fairly new they actually hold full throttle in 1st with my 4.10s. They also have a 360 treadwear rating so they last a relatively long time.

Re: New Tires?

I have the Nitto 555's on my 2001gt and love them. I originally got a used set with rims from a friend and liked them so when the time came I upgraded to new 18" rims with 275's on all 4 wheels. They run great for me and cornering is awesome; even with the stock suspension - great quality for a decent price. Not a bad choice.
My car is pretty stock, but I drive it like it's a Ferrari and they hold up.

Re: New Tires?

My 98' has been through some tires so I'll tell you what I experienced...

Goodyears...just forget it, over priced, horrible traction, and dry rot and wear.

Dunlop SP5000's good tire for traction but dry rot set in after 1.5 years and they wore very quickly after that...I will never buy another Dunlop after they treated me like crap when I asked them to pro rate a new set of tires (told me to pound sand).

Nitto's...best bang for the buck but not the best traction (unless they're drag radials).

Kumho Ecsta...good tire, really cheap price, and great wear...mediocre traction.

FYI

Re: New Tires?

i've got BFG g-force TA KD's...275/40ZR-17....they are AA traction but only 200 treadwear. they hook like a champ. on my 96 gt they fit on all 4 corners w/ eibach 1 1/2 lowering springs. they barely rub and look killer. i love the tread pattern. they guys above have good recommendations, but the appearance of the tread matters to me. these tires look great. the price was $260/ tire, so they are pricey. but $ is no object for my stang. if you look around, you can probably get them a lot cheaper. good luck!
