Bent Push Rods Help

Hello, I got 2 bent push rods on #5 cid on intake and EXT valves they were bent so bad that both roller rockers were off, I was doing my burn out and thats when it happen I think i might have over revved the motor? could the timing being off cause this or loose roller rockers? AnyAdvice Thanks Car9fan

Overrevved and kissed the valves no doubt. I'd pull the head and inspect for damage. You could also replace the pushrods and do a quick compression test or leakdown test to tell you if you bent the valves, but if you bent the pushrods its pretty much guaranteed you bent the valves as well.

Re: Bent Push Rods Help

I bent a total of 17 valves, and 12 pushrods last season, for various reasons. Most of them went when my timing chain went south. Other reasons are misadjusted rockers, CHEAP pushrods (I did that one too), over revving, weak valve springs, weak lifters (hyd), worn/broken valve guides, etc etc

Considering your circumstances, being on only 1 valve, I'd suspect misadjusted valve lash. An overrev usually bends prods on more than 1 cylinder.

Do a compression check on #5 NOW, check and make sure the valves themselves aren't bent as well. You might be yanking the heads. I've gotten lucky a few times and got away with just replacing prods, lets hope that's the case here.

Thanks for the Replys, I just did a compression check and all looks good, All 8 cids. were between 165-170 psi, It is loud in my car and a freind of mine told me that day he heard a tapping sound from the motor but i didnt hear it inside the car, And right before it happen i set the timing from 36 to 38 degrees but wouldnt that afect all cids. Thanks CAR9FAN

Ignition timing shouldn't have anything to do with valve timing.

Like Jeff said, prolly kissed a piston. Iffin the compression checks out OK on #5, I'd put it back together, but I sure as hell wouldn't beat on her for awhile. ;)
