god damn oil pump siezed up on me, 2nd time in 2 months!!! this is absolutly rediculious! what causes them to go so fast on the 5.0's and is there a perminant fix? :rolleyes:

Think about what you have written...do you really believe that Ford oil pumps fail every couple of months?

Hopefully, you've had a beer. What do other components look like, i.e. oil pump driveshaft? How much clearance is there between your pickup and the bottom of the sump? (Measure it with clay)
Is it a melling high volume? What was your oil pressure doing prior to failure?

Also, DO NOT use a stock driveshaft with a HV/HP pump. AIN'T gonna work. Are you sure the pump is locking up, or are you just spinning off the driveshaft? Any crud in the oil pan that can get sucked up.

I GARH-UN-TEE ya I'd be ripping apart an oil pump to find out what the hell happened!!! And if it truly was (another) oil pump failure, someone else would be buying me a new one. ;)

Calm down, have a cold one, go about it logically. I'm sure you'll come up with the answer.

it is a melling oil pump, just asked for a stock replacement when i ordered it, but are all melling's high volume? i wish i could have a beer right now, but currently not drinking, so thats out. im going to go check it all out, and see that i didnt just twist a shaft....

As Jester said....There sure is something wrong here. Oil pumps don't fail like that. Something is causing your concern.

First thing you have to find out is what went wrong????? Did the shaft break?? Did the pump cease up?? Did the pump starve???

You have to find that out before you point the finger at something being defective.

How much crud is in the engine?? Is the pan clean??

I have seen a "high voluume pump" suck a 4 quart [stock] oil pan dry when running at full song. As stated above. Check the clearence to the bottom of the pan, too.

was driving through town, ******* pump siezed, oil pressure was perfect then boom nothing, pulled over, cleaned pan last time i swapped pumps, 2 months ago, then did an oil change. pump is siezed and pushrod is sheared off at the top near the dizzy and it looks like a candycane(all twisted up)

thats exactly what happened last time(not 2 months ago), and it happened on my 88 too.

What is/was the part number of the pump you used? If it has an HV at the end of it(part number), it is a high volume pump. What weight oil are you using? How long has it been since you had the motor apart?

ill dig up the reciept but the motor was apart less than 2 months ago to change the oil pump, an a couple months before that the top end was apart

I never install a pump without 'blue printing' it first. That means taking it completely apart, deburring it, cleaning it and checking clearances. Got too much time and money in any motor not to spend a few minutes making sure it'll get the life blood it needs. Also, for the Mellings, run the 10687 pump. It has a cast cover and a gear rotor with stub shafts both top and bottom. The bottom one extends through the cover so that the gear rotor isn't cantilevered. It also has an adjustable relief valve. There's absolutely no need to run a high volume or high pressure. I spin my motor to 8000+ on every pass and have never had a pump fail. Also be sure that you've got adequate oil pump shaft free play WITH the distributor installed. If you're binding the shaft, the pump will fail in short order since you force the gear rotor against the bottom cover, wiping out the oil film clearance. Pick-up clearance to the bottom of the pan should be 3/8" to 1/2". There's something happening here if you're killing pumps like this.

don't mean to steal your thread, but,
How did you know that your oil pump was on it's way out? I notice the oil pressure gauge in the dash reading low sometimes at idle but moves back to normal when I rev or start driving? Is that a sign that it might be time to change it? I have a 1990 LX with about 147,000KM on it.

it wasnt on its way out, it just up and fucked off, it was a new pump

Another comment, you said the driveshaft was twisted. The pump stopped.....
You need to find out why. Did it eat up some valve seal pieces?? Is there mucho sludge in the engine??

You have said several times that you "cleaned out" the oil pan. What did you clean out?? If the motor is maintained, regular oil changes, there really shouldn't be anything in the pan, but old oil.

What kind of "stuff" do you have in the pan?? There is your problem.

Always get a new pickup. It's cheap insurance.

there was some gasket shit from the stock oil pan gasket, it fell apart as i tryd to take it out, and some dirt that fell in when i pulled the pan(off the side of the motor)

i ordered a new pickup as a little added insurance, oil changes every 4 months from now on, not every 6

Perfectly normal since the pressure comes up when you rev the motor. I would suggest investing in a mechanical oil pressure gauge for better accuracy anyway. Stock gauges suck.

I agree with the previous threads, something is causing the oil pumps to lock up. Something i would do is after the driveshaft twists, take out the bad one, pull out the shaft piece inside the pump, put a new driveshaft in and find a socket that fits it, then manually turn the pump with a ratchet to see if it's bound up - make sure to attempt to turn the way the distributor gear turns, then the other way and back again.
I had a '73 F350 that ran for a month with no oil pressure that was 5 quarts overfull (bought a few days before from a friend for $100) and the pump had junk in it, and had twisted the driveshaft. A new driveshaft fixed the problem and i sold it for $400.
Chances are some crap got into the pump or the pickup is restricted. Also on higher mileage engines it's easy for silicone or pieces of coked oil (carbon) to fill up the pickup or get into the pump.
Maybe the first oil pump just wore out and some junk in the pan, or stuff that fell in while installing got into the new one?
