cleveland heads

Has anyone ever tried putting cleveland heads on a 5.0 H.O. block,I have heard of it being done on a 351 windsor, and it works with a few modifications. It works well on the 351, larger valves and a 1.7 rocker ratio, but you need a different intake.

Re: cleveland heads

The problem with the Cleveland heads is that they flow TOO MUCH air, especially at low rpms. This means that at low engine speeds the air charge does not build enough velocity to adequately fill the chambers. When Ford originally put these heads on the 302 the problem was a loss of power at low engine speed. If you are building a RACE ONLY motor, then these heads MAY be what you need.

Converting these heads to a 351w will be the same process as converting a 302. The deck height difference between 302 and 351w is still there so obviously a 302 Cleveland intake will not fit a 351w w/ Cleveland heads.

Personally I would not use the Cleveland heads on a 302 that needs to make power under 4-5k rpm. This includes ANY car that is going to see street duty.

Re: cleveland heads

If you use the 2 barrel cleveland heads, they have 2.03 intake valves and 1.6 exhaust valves and flow pretty well stock, although the exhaust side is a weak spot because the port has a 90* kink in it. The 4 barrel heads are insanely large and i wouldn't use it unless i had a stroker 351W or were using a supercharger to help fill up those ports.

Oh....there are intake manifolds that work on these "clevor" engines and it used to be a more common swap before there was a good selection of cheap aftermarket 5.0L heads, so now you'd be hard pressed to find an offordable intake manifold for it if you can find one. You can buy a much better windsor heads and intake manifold for the price of swapping on cleveland heads and intake manifold.
