Belt
How should the belt wrap around without the air pump?

Like this, Jeff:

i just did this and kept the same belt routing. all you have to do is get a shorter belt so that the length of belt between the water pump pulley and the alternator dont touch. this pushes the tenshioner up higher and out of the way. i did it that way because the water pump pulley is smooth and if i routed ithe belt like jimberg said the grooves of the belt would be worn down by the smooth side of the water pump pulley.
the belt i went with was 76 5/8" long (with A/C). try it out. i hope it works for you. Adam |

wITH THE RED LINE THE BELT WOULD TURN THE WATER PUMP THE WRONG WAY, AND THE FAN. DON`T GO BY THIS CHART.

Sorry jimburg you have it right, i got confused looking at it.

Well, i tried a 77 inch belt and at first it was fine, but now it has stretched and is rubbing itself.

Jeff, it won't rub with the routing in the diagram. I can't really tell you the length belt to use, though.
429AL, yes, the fan direction is a real head scratcher at first, but as you figured out, it's correct. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif I discovered this by accident when I put my belt on wrong after the rebuild of my car. Even if you aren't trying to bypass the air pump, this routing uses a shorter belt. ------------------ 351W 89 Mustang GT Convertible |
