Re: 1968 289 Torque Converter question

it will really vary, i know ive had some converters that was around 1000 and some was closer to 600 to 800 stock, ive also noticed some would fall off when its really heated up . it really depends on the converter rebuilder too..ive got a tci 2500 behind my cleveland and it really tries to push the car hard after 2200...so it really varys

Re: 1968 289 Torque Converter question

I've always heard that the stock C-4 convertor stalled around 1500 behind a stock 289-302. That would probably be about right for an engine where torque peak was 3000 and power peak was 4400 like the stock 289's (not hipo) were.

It's not untill you hop up the engine with higher torque peak rpms and higher power peak rpms that you really gain anything with the higher stall speed convertors.
