Fuel delivery problem

87 Mustang GT
I have a strange problem somewhere in the fuel delivery system. The problem is that on hot days (above 75 degress) when I drive the car for more than 20 minutes or so, after I shut the car off, when I try to start it again the fuel pump will not turn on. Thus the car won't start. After it cools for a while I turn the key and hear the fuel pump turn on, then it starts fine. In 12 years I've had the car this has been an on going problem going back about 8 years. I have replaced the fuel pump twice and had a short fixed once. What could be causing the fuel pump to not turn on? (fuel pump is in the tank) Thanks.

Re: Fuel delivery problem

It could be the ignition module. They are notorious for not wanting to work right when it's hot out....especially if it's still the stock one. Just something to consider.....

Check the relay and the inertia switch. You should hear the fuel pump with the key on.

I'm sure the ignition module is the original, I never replaced it. If it was bad would that make the fuel pump not turn on? After its hot, I turn the key forward and usually you hear the fuel pump turn on, but when it does this I don't hear the fuel pump turn on.

I forgot, about 3-4 years ago, I had the relay replaced, didn't help. I'll check the inertia switch. Thanks.

Might check the relay anyway... I've had a new ignition module go out in less than a year, and the next last for 4-5 years..
