1986 5.0 with 85 shortblock
Hey guys, quick question;
I've got a 86 stang, with the original motor. I also can get a 85 5.0 motor from a 85 mustang for cheap too. What I intend to do is rebuild the 1985 rotating assembly and then swap the 85 shortblock into the car, using the FI intake and heads from the 1986 motor. Will this work or will there be problems with this setup or will it suck? Also, can I use the 85 heads and bolt the FI manifold up to them? Thanks everyone |
Re: 1986 5.0 with 85 shortblock
I'd use the 85 heads before using the 86 heads...the 86's are probably the worst flowing heads you can use..
Is the 85 engine from a stick car, or auto? And check out www.foureyedpride.com :D |
Re: 1986 5.0 with 85 shortblock
Thanks for the reply Dark Knight.
I am not sure if its from an auto or manual... But my car that its going into has a AOD |

Re: 1986 5.0 with 85 shortblock
Well, if the 85 engine is from an auto car, it has the flat tappet cam, the 85 stick cars have the roller cam.

Re: 1986 5.0 with 85 shortblock
Ah okay! Thanks for clearing that up... So, if its from a stick, and therefore a roller, on the aircleaner will it be labelled as a 5.0 HO? and the auto engine as a normal 5.0?

Re: 1986 5.0 with 85 shortblock
The air cleaner on the roller will say 5.0 liter 4V HO,

Re: 1986 5.0 with 85 shortblock
oh thank you so much Dark Knight, you've saved me a bunch of trouble I can already tell. I'll be sure to go check what the aircleaner says once I have some spare time.

Re: 1986 5.0 with 85 shortblock
If you rebuild the 86 short block, make sure you get different pistons. The stock ones dont have enough valve relief to run much more than the stock cam.
