low oil pressure
I have a 66, 200 straight six. About teo weeks ago my oil prssure gauge has been reading really low when I am at idle or going slow or applying the brakes. When I accelerate it rises. I know I have an oil leak but I always check it and keep it topped up. Could it be I need new gaskets or is it the sending unit? I am going to replace the gaskets very soon is there anyhting else I should look for?
any info is helpful. Thanks teresa  |
Re: low oil pressure
Your gaskets won't effect the oil pressure. The bearings do that.
I'd change the sending unit and see what happens. If it is still low. Well.....the motor is worn. But, try the sending unit first. |
Re: low oil pressure
WEll I have asked around and I have been told it may be the regulator valve. I am trying to find the cheap easy way first. When I look under teh hood there is oil overspray all over the shock tower, and along the distributer. It is even coming out of the filler capp too. Does this narrow it down at all?

Re: low oil pressure
Sounds like you may have something broken. I mean really broken. Like a piston.
If the oil is sprewing out of the filler cap, you have too much crankcase pressure. First, see if the PCV is working. If it is OK, then either the rings are worn, real bad or something like a piston or piston ring is broken. For it to push oil out of the filler neck. The regulator is on the oil pump it self. No easy way to get to it. All this will not effect oil pressure though. Unless there isn't any oil in the oil pan for the pump to suck up and pump. Have you put a direct reading gauge on the engine. You attach it where the oil pressure switch is. Take the switch out, unscrew and screw in direct reading mechanical gauge. This will tell you what you have with no BS. |
Re: low oil pressure
WEll I have decided to pull the engine out and replace all the seals. I will try what you suggested gearhead, thanks it may help. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get an engine manual. I have called canadian mustang and they don't have any instock for a 200 straight six. Any ideas?
