Limits of 28 spline axles

At what point are the factory 28 spline axles not strong enough? I have about 300rwhp with 1.7 60' times.
What is their breaking point?
In retrospect, I SHOULD have gone to 31 spines when I had my 4:10's put in.

Yea i have to run my same stockers too, couldnt afford a new diff.:(
I have done countless 1.71's-1.73's, then again my car is pretty light, I've heard of people going 1.5's and low 1.6's all day (3200lb), but at that point the stock four lug studs are really being pushed to the limit.

I pulled 1.60-1.65 60fts for 3 years and never broke one. We are talking literally hundreds of passes.

I upgraded to 31 spline axles only because my pinion shaft welded its self to the planetary gear and since I had to take it apart to fix that I went ahead and upgraded.

I doubt you would ever break one with the HP you are making with an auto.

If you decide to spray it however I would upgrade just to be safe.

I'm going to spray it but was thinking I would just "hit the button" after the car has launched and is in motion in order to save some of the extra stress on the axles.

If I break an axle, could that mess up my gears? Is this something I don't want to wait until it breaks?

Naw, but there is really nothing holding your axle in the housing but a c-clip, your wheel will try and come out if it snaps, something to think about.

82GT, what kind of times are you turning in the 1/4 and what heads do have ported?

I'm running 12.9s at 102mph. I have '74 heads ported and larger valves installed. I'm still have some top end issues though.

My 28 splines lasted about 1 season, but thats leaving the line at 5000 rpm. I'm surprised they lasted as long as they did.

My stock axles outlasted 3 t-5's launching 5k.

Thats in a car trapping almost 130?
I launch at least 5k everytime, have been for years, but im trapping 107 on a good day, not 120+ which takes quite a bit of power.

I say upgrade to an aftermarket 28 spline, hardened steel, or alloy's those will outlast stocker's anyday.
With 31's your looking at replacing the whole carrier, wich is fine if you have cash.....Me personally, id do it all at once with an auburn pro, or eaton posi replacement.
Later.
