Starter Relay/Solenoid
Is it okay to hook up the wires directly to the battery, instead of hooking them to relay/solenoid side that hooks the positive side of the battery?
A friend seems to think it would be ok. This is for a 66 mustang coupe with a 289. The battery has the normal postive & ground on top hooked up & then the extra wires on the front of the battery. It seems to me that it was hooked to the starter relay/solenoid for a reason.... Any thoughts? Thanks! :D |
Re: Starter Relay/Solenoid
It's just easier to attatch feed wires to the solenoid lug than to the battery post, especially for me since the batterry is located in the trunk. I do put in a fusable link though, when hooking things directly to battrey side of the solenoid. That's because in case of a short circuit, the fusable link will melt and there hopefully won't be a resulting fire hazard.

Re: Starter Relay/Solenoid
I would advise using one. Even with a late model starter w/built on soleniod.
If your not using a starter switch that can handle alot of current The switch is going to burn up. Hopefulley your car doesn't burn up with it. The solenoid is a big relay. A relay takes the load off of any switch. All your heavy loaded circuts use a relay of sorts. Relays will also keep the current from climbing into any harnesses etc that can result in fire. |
Re: Starter Relay/Solenoid
The factory uses a solenoid because it needs one. Don't delete it.
