Better for 67 Stock coupe...302, 351W, 347Stroker, or351C?
So I'm toying with the idea a putting a new engine in my 67 HT coupe, currently a 302 4bbl.
What is the right engine/head combo for a daily driven street car. I want a fast, responsive street car, that could go head-to-head at the stoplight, but not a drag car. I understand each engine has great points, and other have low points (installation adjustments, tranny compatibility, and engine bay modifications, etc). Can anybody offer some advice(or warnings) on what to go with and what not to? Thanks! |

i say a stroked 351W, that'd be cool. Though from reading around here i hear that a 331 (i think its 331 right?) stroked 302 is a good reliable engine.

how much money do you have?

Probably not enough to front the cost of a 351C, but enough to cover a decent 302, 331 stroker, or 289. I'm just curious what my good, solid options for a basic street engine are. What additions are worth the $$ too?

just use the 302 you have if its fresh
afr 165's custom cam speed demon carb rpm air gap intake off the top of my head ...those parts will add up to about $2,200 bucks and to top it off ...jba-1650 and a 1650h (h-pipe) to go with it nice headers ..i have em on mine with mods like that ..you are lookin at between 350-400 hp |

I would recommend a good oil pan too, right now im using the stock oil pan on mine and sometimes I run out of oil after coming down from high rpms (oil pressure drops down pretty quick), something I have yet to fix. If your going to use your stock block I would stroke it out, from what I have seen its not too much money compared to the power gains your getting. I have also heard that a main cap gridle is a good idea, though I have personally not used one so I cannot fully comment. Im sure others on here could tell you if its worth it or not.

Since the 67 has a larger engine bay, just about anything will fit.
Depends on your $$$. Cheapest would be a good built 302. Next up the ladder would be a built 351W. Then up in to the $$$ go with a stroked 302 or 351W. Now you can make some power. I'd stay away from the 351C. Everything is just too expensive and not as available as the W blocks. |

I'd go with the 408w if I wanted speed for the dollar. If I was willing to spend the extra bucks for the parts, go with a big block or 351c for the uniqueness.

Stroke your 302 to a 347, you already have it. More torque, easier to package, less weight, uses all the accessories you have now. Cast crank, decent rods, forged pistons, will cost around $1000. You are going to have to machine a block anyways. Aluminum heads, around $1000. Might be able to reuse intake and carb, I don't know what you have, if not an RPM or Stealth intake with a 600 to 750 carb. The RPM cam works well, and not too expensive. Good headers and exhaust.

I say go with the 408W stroker, that's what I'm putting in my 66. It's costs a bit more than the 302 stroker, but I think it's well worth it. With the 351W you could stroke it up to 427, but that is not very reliable, the 408 is a good balance. Depending on how much money you want to drop into it you can make 400-550hp easy.
