T5

Is it possible to upgrade a 4cyl T5 to withstand the same torque as a 93 5 liter T5 ,wich I believe is around 310lb/ft,If anyone has done this what parts do I need.

Re: T5

I think the only reason for the lower power rating is that the 4cyl version uses bigger gears (more multiplication).
From what I understand it is the different ratios that makes the difference.
I have never seen any confirmation that the materials used were any different.

I would run the 4 cyl trans til it dies. In the mean time start building a custom t5 with the exact ratios you want.

Re: T5

i have had friends that have gone through a trans every other month and eventually started using the 4 cyl trans and some times got longer times of use out of them.

Re: T5

Eventually the 4 banger trans will kill your rear engine bearing.

The pilot shaft on the 4 cyl T5 is longer and smaller dia. There is a pilot shaft bearing that will take up the slack on dia, but not lenght. Machining the lenght is needed.

So in short, It will push into your crankshaft and rattle around if the above in not done.

Will it work, yeah, would I use one? No way. One good launch will shatter it.

A good used V8 T5 or even a new one is alot less than a engine rebuild.

My $.02

The input shaft bearing can be found in the correct size.
There are several applications that are listed in the forums from time to time.
Basically measure the ID of the crank, then measure the OD of the 4 cyl T5.
Take those 2 measurements to a parts store, and they should be able to find the right bearing for you.

Yes the 4cyl unit is still slightly weaker, but it will hold up for a while if you don't beat the living crap out of it on a daily basis.

If funds are tight, the 4cyl t5 can work well. It just isn't likely to work forever.
