I've been running the b cam with 1.7's for years and I like it a lot. Great low end tq and it pulls to red line. I'm sure there are better cams out there (read: custom) but if you're not looking for every last hp I say go for it.

You would be surprised how much lift you can get away with. I am running a .566/.566 lift cam with 2.02 1.60 valves and stock pistons.

The B cam sounds like a good fit though.

Dark-
You are going to be my new best friend when it comes to putting my new heads on, but I will save that for another thread.

goodyear1984-

I am running the E7's, which I think were shaved a slight bit, but that is slipping me right now. Anyhow, I have 1.7 rollers with the TFS-1 cam which is .499/.510 with a set of 1.6 rockers. No clearance issues here.

I will say that I have read that certain cams favor nitrous more then others. Since I no very little more on the subject, I can’t offer much more there.

yea i was thinking of the f cam but i wanted a little less duration but same lift...and i relized that i have a set of comp cam 1.7s and if i get the b cam ill have 2 degrees less duration but the 1.7 will bring the lift up to .510 and with the heads being ported and the intake i think ill be fine i just want the rough idle but i am not willing to loose performance for it...does any one live in new york and have a 70mm t-body for sale?im in rochester

Why an alphabet cam? That's 20yr. old technology. There are MUCH better "off the shelf" cams out there today.

It's not the lift that causes problems, it's the duration.

Actually it's the lift, duration and timing of the valve events that cause problems. :D There's more than one piece to the puzzle.

I have ran the B,E, and F303 cam as well as a FTI custom cam. I am ditching the FTI cam for a Z303 cam in my 331 stroker.

Its 20 year old technology that still is very effective.

Well, you got two out of three right but lift has NOTHING to do with it.

How can lift not have anything to do with it?

I am going to give you the benifit of the doubt and hope you are drunk.

I have installed about 20 or so cams and checked clearances and I have learned you can get too much of a good thing. wether it be lift, duration or cam timing.

Re: what cam should i use on my 92 gt

It all depends on how long the intake and exhaust valves hang open. I've seen cams with lifts as high as .565-.580 with no piston to valve clearance issues simply because the duration was not very long. I admit, most of these cams I speak about were custom cams. It's all in the lobe design on how quick the valves open and closes(duration as most of us call it).

Think of it this way: Suppose you were trying to wack my hand with a hammer before I pulled it back. It's not how far I reach my hand out...it's how long I leave it out there before you get a chance to wack it. Now suppose that the timing of me putting my hand out and you swinging the hammer(and missing) is the same sequence over and over again just like the valve timing of an engine....you always come close but always juuuuust miss me.
Now say I decide to leave my hand out there(same distance) for a split second longer(more duration) and your swinging timing is the same......BAM.....Smashed fingers!!

By the same token you could run .500 lift and a longer duration and not have piston to valve clearance issues.

So now what happens when you stick your hand out further(lift) but leave your had out there for the same amount of time(duration) It'll take you longer to get you hand out of the danger zone because you stuck it out further. So now your fingers get smashed.

I am with this guy.

I have seen cams not clear with 1.7 roller rockers that will clear with 1.6 roller rockers.

Mill your heads 40 thousanths like my old E7's were and you will notice that you cant get away with near as much lift. This wouldnt be the case if "82GT" was correct.

I don't know...I'm sure I'm missing something that won't allow me to explain this correctly.

You can get away with more lift with less duration and you can get away with more duration with less lift.

That is simply the fact of the matter.

Re: what cam should i use on my 92 gt

hey i am a mechanic and i asked what cam to use because i wanted to see how people liked it....the duration it how long the valve is open and has absolutely nothing to do at all ever with the lift....1.7 makes the b cam have .510 lift @ 50 as the 1.6 would be .480....and a cam that will give you the .100 clearence with steel rods and like .120 with aluminum you can have valve float at high rpm ur nuts to say duration has any thing to do with clearance....and the flow is higher with more lift and duration and if u think different then dont give any 1 info on a cam because u will be missleading them

Are you seriously saying that duration has nothing to do with clearance.

Humor me here.
