Need info......

I'am new the 5.0L world, and first thing i need to know is......

What are the spec's of my motor.
I bought a bone stock 88 lx 5.0L H.O. , i need to find out

what "heads" i have ? i've looked on them front and back, and cant find the markings.

Also what "cam" is in it ?

The delimha:.......I bought the 88 lx as a donor car for my current project "94 ranger splash"
The 88 is a speed dencity, but i have the cpu and meter, etc for a mass air conversion.
My ranger will have a 5.0L H.O. - C6 - np 205 ( 4x4 )
I went to the local engine shop to get her rebuilt with some extra ponies, i have no need for a 125MPH ranger, but i would like about 300 horses, and about the same for torque, and he qouted me at about $ 4500 CDN, this would include a full rebuild - a cam - and a set of edelbrock heads.

Now this sounds a bit priecy to me, my thoughts were, a crate motor might be the way to go, if i have to dish out that kinda dough.

I'de like to know any and all of your thoughts or suggestions on what would be the best way to go about attaining 300HP and Big torque #'s.

Thanks in advance

Well you stated it's bone stock, if thats the case, you have E7 heads.
A stock 5.0 H.o. cam which i would keep btw, this cam is a great economical cam, and will build 300 hp with some better heads, and lots of torque. the e7's are a somewhat small valve head, but if ported, can make decent street/strip power.

On the price they quoted, it really does'nt sound that bad if they do good work, and will have your block freshened with some cam bearings ect.. but....

Id blow 1500$ for a brand new stock explorer shortblock, put the 5.0 cam in it, (since the explorer cam is probaly to torquey), and then blow the rest of the cash on a set of afr 165 cylinder heads, you would have a solid 300 hp with a smoothe idle, torque would be through the roof! and throw a cheap explorer or cobra intake on, and you still might have some left after you sell the 88 5.0 longblock with no valve covers:D But thats just me:)

Well there is a cheaper way to get good results, the afr heads are pricey, and you would need bigger injectors and maf meter to support aluminum heads, would need a bigger throttle body, as you probaly know it can get pricey when you start getting away from "stock".
