speedometer trouble

I've been having trouble getting my speedometer to work in the forward gears. I didn't have a drive gear in the transmission so I put one in and now the speedometer works in reverse but still won't work in forwards. It actaully counts the odometer backwards when I move in the forward gears. I've tried both right handed and left handed driven gears and neither of them cure the problem. Any suggestions on where to start next? I would really appreciate it! Thanks

Not kidding at all! The odometer has been going backwords and the speedometer is only working in reverse. I put in a 7 tooth drive gear and a 17 tooth driven gear. The transmission is a 1969 302 boss/351 wide ratio transmission. I still have no idea what is going on. if you can think of anything else I can try it would be greatly greatly appreciated.

I seem to remember my neighbor having this problem a number of years ago... I'm thinking that he swapped out the tailshaft housing for one that mounted the gear on the opposite side???

It has to be the tailhousing as Phillyfanfrombirth said. I've never seen a gear on the output shaft that was made to turn the other way.

Your transmission must have some strange tailhousing from who knows what.
