68 "S" code HIPO??
I read an article many years ago in a Mustang publication about the 68 S code mustang with a rare option...HIPO 390 with blacked out turn signal reliefs and rear taillight panel...I think it possibly was a dealer option?? It was basically a GT w/o all the bling. I think I may have one, that is why the article caught my eye. Has someone else heard the same? I've checked the registry and seems like everything is smallblock hipo. HELP!!

Re: 68 "S" code HIPO??
the S code is a 390 option for the Mustang, it's not a hi-po,it's a desirable option though.

The S code was a 335hp 390,the "std."390 4v was 300hp.The S code was the high performance GT 390 engine.

As others have said, the 390 wasn't ever refered to as a HIPO. 390 GT yes, but not HIPO. The only HIPO was the K code solid lifter 289, which was discontinued after 1967 in the Mustang.
What the original poster may be thinking of is a fairly rare regional special called the "Stallion Edition." This was a 1967 fastback offered through a Canadian dealer. They came with either the 289 HIPO or the 390 GT. The rear tail light panel was funky because it had Cougar tail lights! Very odd looking IMHO, but hey, it's rare! :D More info: 1967 Stallion Edition |
