Rebuild help on 1993 E150 5.8L/E40d trans
I've got 1993 E150 Hi-top van, 5.8L non-roller w/E40D. runs great but gaskets leak, rear main seal (1 pc), oil pan leak, timing cover. When I pull the 5.8 out i want to rebuild it to make about 400 HP versus rebuild it to the stock 200 hp. I want to keep it cheap and simple, i'm not trying to pull the front wheels off the ground. Also what will I have to do to the E40D tranny for this project.

400 hp aint cheep.ill give u a small list to start with
10.5 to 1 pistons aftermarket heads, afr 185,world 200,patriot 185 camshaft roller rockers edlebrock rpm intake injectors headers the killer is the heads and intake will run u over 2 grand.the stock stuff just wont breath.the heads on that motor are on mustangs and there even too small for that. as far as the tranny u would prolly want some better clutches hardend imput and mabey a diff planatary. u can go about this 10 diff ways.u really gotta know what ur gonna do with it,like are u gonna toe thing or just race it around town |

The E4OD had some upgrades in 1996 so you'll want to incorporate those. The main one I believe is an internal support of the rotating parts. It's a heavy trans but with good cooling, updates, and reprogramming, it will work well. You'll need a bit higher stall converter to handle a cam that will support your stated power goal.
I think you can make real good torque with AFR 185s and a mild cam. It will actually feel much better to drive than a stock-stroke 351w that actually does make an honest 400 hp. I do think 9.5:1 compression ratio is a better target as well. A mild higher stall converter is still going to help get that barn moving. |

I pulled my 5.8L out last week and found things I didn't expect. It has 1993 Cobra GT40 F3ZEE AA Iron Heads complete with aluminum roller rockers and a Edelbrock performer plus #3782 camshaft (hyd flat Tap). The block and pistons and botom end is all oem stock. Any suggestions now? Port/polish the heads? Freshen up the block, re-ring it with new gasket and or still put heads and or cam in it? How many horses do you think this was making? |

you can port match and do some bowl work.id personally go with afr 185 u would get alot more out of it.and get nice edelbrock intake and a cam that matchs, you will get 10 diff answers on what cam to use and belive be when i tell u its worth every penny to spend 280-300 on a custom cam from a shop that makes them like erson, cuz thats all they do and the cam is a big part of making power and if the cam dont match everything else it wont run to the fullest
