Air conditioning upgrade
Wondering if anyone knows anything about switching over to the new AC refrigerant. Trying to see how in depth it is with replacing lines or vaccuming out the old stuff (not that there's any left).

Here's a place to start. They have message boards with the pros, cons, dos and don'ts. http://www.aircondition.com

i say don't convert to the new 134A!!! it just plain sucks! the old R12 blows soo much colder. i just had the conversion done and i hate it! the only time it blows cold is when i'm on the highway. driving around down it starts losing the coolness, then at a idle it starts blowing warm. but incase u still want to do it, they use all the same lines and stuff. they purge the system and put new oil in the compressor, and new fittings.

I would switch over to the 134, because R12 is just to much money!!! You can get a can of 134 for about $4-5 at Wal-Mart... R12 last time I checked was around $20, and you have to be registerd to buy it...
It's really not hard, buy the little kit with the new o-rings and its pretty much all spelled out for you in the kit... Good luck! |

The kits are even easier than O-rings to install. It goes something like this. Take it to an approved automotive refrigeration specialist to be evacuated and have vacuum applied. The vacuum will do two things: 1. Let you know if the system will even hold the new refrigerant, and 2. Remove any water in the system, a/c's number one enemy. Next put on the coversion valve pieces and fill the system with everything in the conversion kit. Basically, follow the directions. You should now have cold air. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif ------------------ Capri306, Moderator, The Mustang Works Online 1979 Mercury Capri, 5.0L -- C4 -- 2.73 1987 Mustang LX Notch |
This guy has done it on several cars - and his write up is pretty good

ok what could be wrong with mine? it just doesn't blow cold! the guy checked all lines and put new fittings and seals in. he said its cause i have done some mods to my motor, but i don't think thats y. could he be ripping me off, and not putting enough 134A in, just to get me to go back??? should a buy a can of 134A and add more myself?

Actually R12 is not harmful to the environment - The have proven this since the conversion... Also did you know catilitic converters dump more N+ into the atmosphere... My college chem. teacher did a lot of research on that crap... Any who -
Capri is right, there is something wrong with your system - get it check out.. You really need to bring it somewhere.. They can vacuum check it or use the sniffer to find any leaks... |
