Crazy Noise From Under The Hood!!!

I have got a sort of grinding, metalic sound coming form under my hood. It has to do with something that runs on the belt, becasue when I take the belt off I don't hear it. I have changed the water pump and the alternator and it is still making the noise. I would appericate any help you guys can offer. I have a AC, power steering, and power brakes.

This will sound funny, but the best way to isolate a noise coming from an engine is to take a sold stick or metal pole about 2 or 3 feet long and touch one end to each component and the other to your ear... sounds weird and looks even weirder, but it helps in isolating noises. You hear exactly what's going on with the interior of that component. Just be very careful with moving parts when you do this. try it, you'll like it!! http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif

Check your idler pulley. Check to see if it has any play. Mine went bad and squeled like a pig before it locked up.

I tried the metal stick thing, but I used a doctors stephascope. It sounds to me like it is coming form the air pump below the alternator.
