This really doesn't answer your question but it's the way I drive. I've had a few quick cars including an 11-second Chevelle. It was an automatic but had a fully manual valve body. Without having a dyno chart and knowing where your peak numbers are, I always experiment with different shiftpoints. In the Chevy, I shifted at around 6500 rpm. After several passes, I realized that my ET's didn't really change by shifting at 6100-6200 rpm. Doesn't sound like much but I'm sure the motor appreciated the earlier shift. With my 'stang, I haven't run it yet as I just bought it a week ago. Playing around on the street like I have, I've experimented by feel. Going by what the stock (read http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/tongue.gifrobably inaccurate) tachometer says, I've been hitting second gear at around 5200-5300rpm.
If you have a night when you can get to the track when it's not too populated, try and experiment. I have a 96 also and I'd love to know what you turn at the track.
